Kansas Ilia Received About 15,000 of the Southern Refugees. Topeka, Kan Dec. 81.—A staff corres pondent of the Chicago Inter Ocean, who has been making an investigation of the exodus in.Kmsas duting four weeks trav el through the state, writes a letter from here giving bis conclusions. He estimates the number of refugees in this state at 15, 000. Of these he thinks probably one-fifth are able to buy a little land and are making Hood progress in farming. Most of the balance have found through tbe Freedman's relief association places as laborers and give good satistsction, and in no county did be find them applicants or burdened or cor poration charities, but tbe demand for ibese laborer* has been stretched to its full est capacity, as tbe accumulation of refugees it tbe barracks, now 700, for whom no places can be fouad, clearly indicates. Judging from what be has learned from the refugees themselves, and from tbe in creasing number, now from tweoty-fi'e to tifty-five arriving every day, the loter-Ocean representative predicts tbat tbe movement to Kinsas will soon assume sucb propor tions attain as to astonish the country, and uoless the tide can be turned or the chari ty ol the north more readily bestowed, that the suffering which the relief committee, although laboring faithfully with tbe means at tbeir command, baa- not been en tirely able to relieve during tbe recent cold weather, wiSl soon be turned into, general destitution aud great suffering among tbe pauper refugees Tbe Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe rail road company commences run ning regular trains to-morrow to Arkansas City, which Is on tbe line but ween Kansas and the Indian territory. ONE OF THE BLIZZARD'S VICTIMS. Fargn Republican. Last Saturday afternoon tbe unforlunate German lad, Julius Bellau, who was so bad ly frozen a short time ago, submitted to the amputation of both his hands. The opera tion was very FkiUfully and successfully performed by Dr. E. M. Darrow, Dr. R. T. Rolph giving ether. They were tssisted by F. L. Hall, a student in Dr. D.'s office, snd Mr. Robinson, the best nurse in the Red River vallev. The patient was tinder the influence of ether not fifty minutes. Both hands were removed in that time with the loss of scarcely an ounce of blood. Tht poor boy seemed surprised on recovering from the influence of tbe antithetic to find himself minus his hands. He is doing well, but his feet were also so badly frozen that it will be necessary to amputate a portion of one and perhaps both as soon as he recovers sufficiently to bear the operation. Dr. Dar row is a young man, but his success in this and other surgical operatic n« has placed him at tbe head of his profession in the vsllev, and he is making a reputation at -killful and successful surgeon that is not confined to Dakota. V*!? "s'j1 ilo awiy with the necessity of heat in well lighted apartments. One can produce a dazzling illumination without changing the temperature. As there is no combustion there no smoke, so that this is the light long sought for picture galleries. Wherever a wire can be stre died light may be cheaply produced, so there will be no excuse for dark alleys. This will be the terror of burglars, for by the noiseless touching of a key not only an apartment but an entire house may be in stantly flooded with light, to the terror and di*conifiture of all who seek darkness that they may do evil. It is alight that does not harm the eyes, and that may be shaded and regulated at pleasure—combining the softness of the oil lamp with the splendor of the burning of carbon points. The opinion is not entertained that an entire c'uy could be supplied with electricity from a single establishment. New York, for instance, is to be divided into twelve districts, each receiving the magical current I'rom an independent centre. From four to six districts under this system would com prehend the compact portion of Cincinnati. Ellison's favorite theory on the subject is that the gas companies will be glad to buy the right of lighting under his invention, and that the wirts will be conveyed through the gas pipes, the new lamps being simply screwed on where the gas tips are found. Miles, when placed upon the stand, was treated more generously. He had known Ilia de fendant since the November subsequent to tha crime charged, and found him quiet and law-abiding. Brugbuier waa always anx ious and willing to meet the indictments sgainet him. The counsel for the govern ment and the defendant summed up the case. The former held' that the blow was unnecessarily severe, and the latter that it WHS in self-defense. After half an hour's deliberation the jury returned a verdict of acquittal. The audi ence joined in enthusiastic applause, and the whole crowd pressed arouud the scout to shower their congratulations upon him. Gen. Miles was a conspicuous figure in the crowd. He was never happier over another man's escape. EDEN REJOICING. Eden Sun. At the election held in Yank'on last Tuesday to vote on the proposition of issu ing $35,000 in aid of the Milwaukee road, the proposition carried by a majority of 642 out tf 651 votes cast. This shows that the people of Yankton are in earnest about the road, and are sure to get it. The vote throws aside all doubt as far as Eden is concerned, and establishes the fact that we will have a railroad junction here early in the spring. The vote of Yankton waa some significance in the future progress of the Milwaukee road, and on what aid that city would give or do was of no small interest to the entire line of road as far as this branch is concerned. Now that question is settled, and we know beyond the least donbt that Eden's future as a railroad town is guaran teed. Our people have reason to be thank ful that one important queston is settled which concerns tbem and the town. We can now safely prepare for a lively future for our active little town. A PIECE OF OUR EARTHQUAKE. Springfield Times. Tbe people of Yankton were shaken up by an earthquake Monday nigh'. The shock was very distinct, and waa accompa nied by a rumbling sound similar to thun der. It extended as tar west as Fort Sully, hut we bave yet to learn tbat any person noticed the shock in tbis Immediate locali ty. Sbeiiff Ptak says tbat having juat re turned from Hutchinson county Sunday evening, and being engaged in writing in his bouse at Haveljek, be was suddenly tt-irlled by tbe violent shaking of tbe house and himself. He soon determined tbat an earthquake bad come along, and was about right. On taking out his watch be saw that it was just 12:30 o'clock, WEATHER STRIPS. A REVELATION BURST Upon the public press and medical profes sion, when, over twenty-five years ago, that grand result of medical research and synthetic skill, Hostetter's Stomach Bitters was given to the world. Soon after it had started on its curative mission it was dis covered that the botanic properties far surpassed those of the approved mineral remedies of the day. Not the least among the good consequences of its general use has been to disabuse men's minds of many absurd medical fallacies, and to demonstrate the superiority of vegetable remedies. It conquers and prevents malarial fevers, dys epsia, chronic constipation, a tendency to lidney and bladder ailments and rheuma tism, and is nf the greatest value in cases of bodily trouble arising from weakness. Old people are greatly aided by U, and it is highly^ serviceable to convalescents and ladies in delicate health. It is moreover, a useful medicine to take with one on long ourueys, and counteracts the effects of mental exhaustion. COMPLIMENTS OF THE SEASON. Prof. A.
