PUBLISHED DAILY, EXCEPT SUNDAY, BY 3NT. XL. BXLIiEIL, Editor and Proprietor. s— —= —Mujor Gliifcko returned yesterday and gives us K>me items regarding the western portion of Wyoming, which will hoof inter st to many of our readers. i'i He:ll^ r er !(iC.lted upon a small reservation, about twelve miles south of Carter Station, j-tho nearest point on the Union I’acific '.Toad. The original military reserva- I lion was twenty miles Wide and ! twenty-five miles in length, and cm t,races some of tlio most valuable lands in Wyoming. The military I reservation was cut down to a very small size soon after tlio Union Pn , eific had passer] that country, and lost its opportunity to take any of said lands under the grants provided in its charter. Tims it was that one of the finest parts of Wyoming is left ' free to settlement by pre-emption in the usual way. Though but little known as yet, a number of families I have already settled in the country in the vicinity of Fort Bridger. The country south of the fort is a succession i of fine valleys, with rich soil, and well watered with frequent streams, among which arc Ham’s Fork,Black’s Fork, and an infinite number of lesser streams, ail tributary finally to Green Biver. The higher grounds rbo :nd in timber, and immense pine so ods are found within twenty to thirty miles of Fort Bridger. With the coal whifh abounds in the vicinity of the railroad, and plenty of timber for building, the country in question offers every advantage to set tlers. Three saw-mills are in operation iuid the last quality of lumber is of fered at twenty dollars per thousand. The general elevation of the country is between four and five thousand feet above the sea, a rapid descent being made in going south from the line of the railroad. Til is elevation is but a trifle greater than the Salt Lake Valley,.and insures tlio growth of all the cereals, fruits and productions of that valley. The leading citizens of this section which lies in Uinta coun ty, will take an active interest in the immigration scheme now progressing in this Territory. With an area al most twice that of Pennsylvania, Wyoming possesses treble the oppor tunities for agricultural and mineral development. The lands about Fort Bridger comprise but a small part of the valuable lands of the Territory. All that is requisite is that the coun try be made known to the outside world by systematic advertisement of its resources, to induce a rapid flow of immigration. —Mr. SiAimcr is hinted at as the prnperest person to reyresent the United States in the proposed con gress of nations. —“No man dares to will mo his own,” triumphantly declared Miss Susan B. Anthony at 4,e Woman Suffrage Convention in Harwell Hall, Chicago, Saturday afternoou, It’s a fact.— rout. —The line of the Northern Pacific Railroad passes over a fertilo belt of country stretching from Illinois to Washington Territory. The terminus, on Puget Sound, is eight hundred miles nearer to Chinn, than San Fran cisco, and also nearer to New York. —The New York Commercial Ad vertiser is very wratliy becauseßergh, after ills raid on Kit Burns’rat pit, threw all tlio rats into the river, although they were unprepared for tlio change. It thinks the blpcdswho owned the rats should have been thrown in and the rats saved. A cow was demolished on a Long Island Railroad track, and tlio com pany refused to pay the owner, whose nimu is Reeves. Now a squad if men is sent forward each day to re move tlio carcass from the track, for Reeves Is so great a lover of humanity that he lias already stopped three trains by placing the deceased cow in the position death found tier. A homely method of disinfecting houses in which cases of scarlet fever have occurred, is recommended by the Food Journal. It is thus: Dis solve in a certain quantity of water as much saltpeter as it will hold ; and in thfi solution soak several sheets of course blotting paper, which must be allowed to ahsnrbas much ns possible. Carefully close every door, window and chimney of the affected room, and let the prepared blotting paper lie lighted and smoulder itself out. ’Phis mettiod is said to lie efficacious, and is certainly easy of trial. CHEYENNE, WYOMING, MONDAY; DECEMBER 5, 1870. —On tho 2(!th instant occurs tlio annual election of town trustees for this city. One trustee from each of the four wards, and one trustee from the town at large, together, constitute the Board andare all the elective offi cers provided by law to manage the affairs of tlio city. It is well known that tlieold Board have been hampered in the enforcement of license tax and its special tax for tlio support of the fire department. This arose from there being somo question ns to the legality of tlio tenure of their offices, having been appointed by the Gov ernor instead of elected by tlio people. The new board will have no such dif ficulty to encounter. We believe the old Board were disposed to economize in expenses so the utmost extent. In fact this tendency may he said to have been carried too far, in some in stances. The Board for the coming year will have some important mat ters in charge. Moreextended police service will become necessary as the totvn grows. The regulation of water supply will demand cureful attention, and probu'oly the title of tlio town site will be settled within the next twelve months. These are matters of much importance and demand that our citizens should place reliable and competent men in charge of city aiTairs. We call attention to the mat ter in order that ample discussion of these matters may he eVoked prior to the election. Ilubltu»l Constipation. now TO EFFECT A CERTAIN AND PERMANENT CUBE. London, Doe. 3.—Tho Duke of \ Mecklenburg makes tho following | report: Yesterday morning,' a bat- j ; tie commenced near Bnzachoa I.es j Iluutcs. After a hot fight, Rio fif teenth French army corps were de feated and driven bark to Artenay, and the sixteenth French army corps were driven beyond Loigny. Sev eral hundred prisoners and eleven , guns were taken. The enemy’s lass was considerable. Our loss is un known, but it is much smaller than I that of the enemy. London, Dee. 3.—The fighting at Bfie on Friday was very severe, tho Germans being exposed to a steady fire from tf:e French forts, but nt 3 p. m., the French retired, leaving behind many prisoners. Brie, though abandoned by the Freed:, lias not been occupied by the Germans. The French wounded, who have fallen into the hands of the besiegers, re fuse the offer so be sent back to Paris. Gorman leaders are losing much of theiroverweening confidence, in con- J sequence of recent military overt-. ■ Prince George--f.Saxcnv, hi a dispatch to the King ofSaxony, stales that Brie and Ghampegny have been recaptured, although the French brought heavy masses into action. He admits tliat tl’.e S'-’vons lost grieviou.ilv. Touia, Dec. 3.—On Friday night, j the movement of t lie army of l tic lot re ; eontiuuod and I lime were frequent en counters all along U:e line of the ad vance without marked advantage to j either side. In one of them General! Sounis was wounded and taken pris oner. This momentarily checked j tlie advance of the 17th corps, which, | however, held its position. The mo-1 rale of tke troops is excellent and the F. each are confident of success. Tlie j second attack was madeon Antrim by I tlie Prussians, and was repulsed with considerable loss to the assailants. The enemy continue their retreat from the north. Lille, Nov. 4. —The evacuation of Amiens by the Germans is confirmed. The enemy, as they retired, blew up tlie bridge between Albeit and Ash eux to protect their retreat. Noth ing since Is heard of Gen. Monteufi'el. I There is little doubt bv.t that he Itas abandoned his march or. the north, and that lie is hastening, with a!i his I forces, to Paris. Tours, Dec. 4.— The government ' makes the following announcement: Tlie army of the Loire has discontin- , ucxl its forward movement, owing to j the resistance of tiie enemy, who has concentrated large masses of troops between Pitliivtors, Artenay and Augurvillo. The army occupies ! stronglj- entrenched positions, in which it will remain for the present, IMistponiiig an advance until a better opportunity is offered. Meomvliile, Ducrot, with tlio army which he led out from Paris, is disengaged and will lie able to net more freely, not finding before his masses of tlie ene my it was supposed were going to meet him, but which arc really re- j tninod north of Orleans. Signed, Gambktta. The marching of troops through Tours, and the way to the front, is incessant. Tlio weather is intensely cold. London, Dec-. 4.—A Tribune eor rosixmdcnt at Versailles on the Ist instant, writesthat tlie sorties against the VVurtemlmrg division on tlio east of Paris, between the Heine and Marne, resulted in leaving the French in possession of tho villages about Brie-sur-Murno. Tho Germans say they must retake these at any cost. Tho French occupied tlie lino oa ■ the riglit and left of Comesson. They were driven hack with heavy loss from- tin's their most advanced posi tion. The Wnrlemburger’s were supported by brigades of the Poinerarian corps, tho Crown Prince’s old corps, and a great part of the Sixth corps. Both sides fought hard. The French were led by dismounted officers of high rank, and showed something of their traditional firmness. Had not the W’urleuihurgera been very steady while being driven back, ind laid not (lie Prussians arrived prompt ly to their support, tho investing line might here have been brok en. The French merely gained a bettor foothold for their future opera tions. Their great want is space to deploy their forces.. A very hard fight took place the same day north of St. Denis. The French sallied out against the Fourth Prussian corps. The attack was repulsed, and a num ber of prisoners were taken by the Prussians. The French 1 >ss wr.s : heavy, including seventeen officers. Prince Frederick Charles’ opera tions, though not unsuccessful, was much hindered by the heavy roads, the army being fatigued with long marches. To-day all is quiet on the southern front of Paris. I The first shell was fired into the city yc.-torday from the Bavarian batteries near Aral! I lon. The shot Wits accidental. Tho Crown Prince has onlordered tho use of no more guns at present at such range. I f Hie French try more sortie's there will probably boa Sharp attack on I the outlying defenses of Paris. A correspondent of tho Tribune telegraphs from Berlin Sunday after noon, that the King telegraphs to the Queen Unit there was no fighting yesterday at Paris; the French were massing troops from Vincennes during the night of Dec. 2d, and that the French lost 18,000 prisoners, including one general and twenty superior officers, besides seven guns. The bombardment of Belfont has commenced. Nothing new lias been received from the army of the Loire. The military situation among the best informed circles is deemed critical. Ii is stated on good authority that B: marek insi-ls that lie must and' will retire from office until the con vention of the South German States is adopted unaltered. Tor us, Dec. 4.—G'ambelta lias gone to Orleans to consult with the officers of the army of Hie Loire. The battle on Friday, in which the sixteenth and seventeenth corps were engaged, was protracted and sanguinary. There was great losses on both sides. The Prussians used heavy artillery. The army of the Loire will receive large reinforcements. It is rumored that Ducrot) still near Paris, lia.s boon reinforced, and will speedily take the offensive. A correspondence from St. Peters burg, Sunday aft .’moon, says: Gran ville’s reply to Gortselmkoff's second note was delivered yesterday. It in sists that Gortseliakoff admits, by his answer, that his position is wrong in law. The note consents to a conference only upon tho understanding that she, Russia, is to withdraw her original circular, and disavows all pretensions to a right of separate ac tion, that Russia is to bring her pro positions before the conference anew, to be decided without regard to previous pledges. Otherwise the British Kni hiissy will be withdrawn. The Eng lish think Hie note a diplomatic vic tory. The position however, is still delicate. Chicago, Dec. 4.— There is great excitement at Elgin, 111., over tlie death, yesterday, of a lady in that city, from n new and strange disease, after a week’s terrible suffering. A port mortem examination disclosed an Immense number of parasitic aninml culne filling every portion of tlie body. Physicians decide that it is not trich ina, tlie parasites not resembling those, and the patient not having been in any Way exposed by eating infected food. ■Washington, Dec. 4.—A tetter from Jackson, Miss., says that tho grand jury in July last found a true bill against Yerger for imiiislaugbter. The court lias not been in session since that time. It is more than probable there will be a change of venue, and that it is doubtful if there is a trial. 1 lAnzusni.’Hci, Penn., Dec. 4.—A tire near Markenville, l’enn., to-day, destroyed tho dwelling of John P.
