—The President’s miwige will be
found on tlio inside pages of to-day’s
palter. The amount of labor requir
ed to publish it, precludes the appear
ance of much other matter, in this
issue. The message is an able and
comprehensive documont, treating
with proper fullness of the leading
questions of interest connected with
i the national polity. The President’s
views upon our English relations, the
i Alabama claims and tlie fishery
question, on the San Domingo aniiex
: ation, revenue and civil service re
forms, commercial marine, and In

I and well worthy of careful perusal by
those wishing to keep well informed

Tiie Commissioner of (tie General
Land Office has directed the local
land officers here to appoint a day for
receiving evidence 11s to the title to
the town site of Cheyenne. In com
pliance with tlit-se instructions, on
.Monday, the 9th day of January,
1871. iu 10 o’clock a. in., the evidence
in the i.iatier will he heard at the
Land Office in this place. Any per
son or persons claiming any portion
of said town site under the pre
emption laws c.'f the United Slates,
can then and there file their evidence
as to his or their claim.

—Jno. Plummer, the soldier who
was before tiic U. S. Court last week,
charged with murder, and on which
occasion a jury disrgreed on a verdict
as to his guilt or innocenne, has got I
the start of any movements for a new 1
trial, by confessing to the possibility ,
of his being guilty of manslaughter.!
He says he was drunk at the time of !
the occurrence, and may have fired
the fatal shot, but does not know ]msi
tively that lie did it. He expressed
n preference to serving a term in the
Penitentiary and learning a trade, to
taking another trial. Judge Howe
accordingly sentenced him to two
years imprisonment in the Detroit
House of Correction.
—Randolph, the colored man who
shot towards, with intent to scare,
another darkey, has just been tried in
the District Court, and received a fine
of fifty dollars and costs, for the
amusement. Be content next time,
Randolph, to “shoot off your mouth”
instead of your pistol. It won’t cost
so much;
Antiquity.—We have been shown
by Mr. Joslin the title pageof a work
in Latin, which was printed in IG4-1.
It is a quaint looking specimen of l
typography, and in strange contrast j
to the tine work of the present day. :
The following line, taken from the
title page, will give some idea of who
j got up the book: “Georgia l’artore,
Autore.”
=====
—Loftud and O'Dowd, who had a
little “Schutzuufest” on Fifteenth
street some weeks since, were yester
day lined ouch fifty dollars fipd costs.
Next time they shoot at each other it
would bo well to go out into the
country where nobody would see
them, dig a hole, each get into it,
tire at shorter range, and—not tell
anybody of the circumstance.
Sr.ri‘l. Ghcilwandneii.—A novel
entertuinment is to lie given at Mc-
Daniel's Theatre, on Wednesday nnd !
Thursday evenings of tliis week, by ,
ft troupe of Tyrolenns, consisting of
Prof. Seppl Crschwnndner, nnd two
Indies, nnd 11 vo gentlemen perform
ers. The entertninment is to consist
of songs, in Tyrolean costumes, aud
instrumental music. Among the nov
el instruments which will lie used lire
tlio “Zither,”' nwd tin instrument
composed of wood nnd straw, which
produces delightful music. A first
class entertninment is promised.
—The two fishermen, belonging to
Innistrahull, who state that they have
discovered where the steamship.Cam
bria is sunk, will not give any infor
mation except on conditions, They
found out a portion of the wreck
whilst fishing. .Their 11 tics caught at
the bottom, and ns they knew there
were no rooks about the place they
lowered a lino with n stone attached,
and commenced sounding, nnd from
the stone getting frequently caught,
and tiie difference in the depth when
moving along, they concludo that
they have found the missing steamer.
