PUBLISHED DAILY, EXCEPT SUNDAY, BY 3NT. jDL. BAKER., Editor and Proprietor. —A sumple-of the way lar<;e corpo- | rations sometimes “run” each other occurred this week. Great rivalry ; exists between the Western Union and the Atlantic and Pacific telegraph lines. 011 Monday, when the Presi dent’s message should have been transmitted to the west, the wires of one of the above companies was cut j in a half dozen places. Lex talion «, the taw of retaliation, was adopted by the injured company, and the wires of the other company likewise cut. The war continued late iu the evening, and it was only possible to i send the message in detached por tions, and very slowly, it was near ly morning of Tuesday when its transmission was completed, and nil army of a thousand at least, editors, proof readers and compositors, in the western States and Territories, delayed and provoked almost beyond endur ance, by these freaks of envious cor porations. If we had about one more competing company, with wires througliout tlic United States, it would l>e better for the people, both in the better facilities for news and I the reduction of the cost of private 1 messages, to something like reasona ble figures, . Tyrol.—This country is a province of Austria, situated in the western part of that empire, bordering on Switzerland. The people are partly German and Italian descent, a mixed language of the two being skoken, and the people, as was confirmed by observance of their features and p/iys ique, in the Tyrolean troupe of vocal ists, who exhibited here last night, bear manifest similarity to German and Italian casts of character, com bined. Astrikiug trait of Tyrolean fe male character is the willingness and spirit with which they participate in \ labors and employments, belonging iu other countries to masculines alone. 111 their native country farm labor, manufactures and almost all avoca tions are participated in by tlic fe | mates. In their last war against j Havana, to which power they were j then attached, women fought side by I side with men, and on one occasion j four hundred women were slain, and fell by the side of their husbands, fathers and brothers in their struggle for their rights. Our citizens had an opportunity‘lust night of seeing a troupe of seven of these people, two ladies and five gentlemen, iu a grand musical entertainment, led by i’rof. Gschwandner. A full attendance, embracing most of the leading families 01 town, greeted thcappearance of the Tyrolese. The vocal music was fair, and exhibited that cultivation of tho voice, which conies alone from con tinued practice. Tlit.’r son 0 -s being in their native dialect, were nut under stood, and therefore, not as fully appre ciated as they would otherwise have been. And here wo must express the opinion that western tastes prefer, sis a rule, to understand and appreciate the sentiment of intelligible words in a vocal exhibition, rather than oper atic, or similar performances. But for ail that, the concert last night was appreciated, and in the dearth of amusement was a welcome diversion. The troupe appears to-night, witli a new programme. Those who wish to see music extracted from sticks, tiie “zither,” and similar instruments, peculiar to these people, will do well to attend this evening. Besides it is \yorth an evening’s time and ttie price of admission to hear that fellow of the troupe who lauy/is lo music. The Lincolnshire (England) men still keep lighting the sea, as the Dutchmen have done for ages. The latest feat has been the inclosing of 1,001) acres of valuable alluvial land in the parishes of Kirkton and Frnmpton. The embankment, about four miles in length, has been com pleted in the short space of six months.’ Petroleum originates in limestone rock. Near Chicagoisa bed of Niagara limestone which contains nearly half its weight of oil, four square miles of which contain more oil than Pennsylvania has produced in ten years. Not a drop of this oil is ob tainable, however, because tho strata must bo subjected to intense heat to distil tlie oil into crevices in the rocks, which lias been the case with tho j Pennsylvania formation. An obvious Inference from the occurrence of pe troleum in limestone is, that i; arises ftflm the remains of an oily polyp, which built the coral reefs from i which the limestones were formed. 1 YORK. The German j artillery was- served with fearful and j overwhelming effect. The Papal I zouaves fought with superhuman , bravery, but.nearly all were killed. The government appeals to the people of France to still maintain re sistance, which is certain finally to I end in triumph. The army of the Loire is still over 200,000 strong. Du ring another month, 800,000 French- I men will be in arms. Paris may fall, j The campaign has changed in char- ! acter, and is fust becoming a detached 1 warfare, with armed resistance in the open country. France herself is unconqucred. London’, Dec. o.—The English | government has given u contract for sixty batteries, eight guns each, of Gatling initailleurs, to be made in | America. The Russian government has in its employ, a number of American workmen in Russia, engaged in man ufacturing mitrailieurs. The battle commenced on Thursday, continuing with varying successes during Fri ; day and Saturday, but Sunday, the j successes to the German troops were I great, although purchased at great | cost. It Is under stood that the Dominion government have no idea of abandoning their present policy, although thoroughly desirous of behaving in a friendly manner towards the United States. Some of the lawyers and nearly all t f the mopibers of tho legislature con tend that the first of tho biennial sc-sion, provided for by the laws of Congress, can be held now.
