Captain Thomas left on the 20th with cavalry and the Warm Spring Indians to reconnoitre in the vicin ity of the Modoc position. A special courier who arrived this evening Irom the Lhva bed says, that the opinion prevails at the headquarters that the Modocs will not make another stand, but will break up in smull parties, and must bo hunted by detail, making an all summers work for the cavalry. Chicago, Apri 1 28.—A Washing ton special says, an exceedingly sharp cent rover.-y Is promised bi tween commissioner Vun Buren and the Secretary of State over the al-1 leged irregularities growing out of the Vienna exposition scandal. The friends of the commissioner ex plain, thnt vory reason why he did not file his bond, arose from the fact, that tho fourteen general ap pointments of commissioners were made by the State Department, and Van Buren did not propose to make himself responsible for the distribu tion of a fund amounting to two hundred thousand dollars. In a let ter to-day on this subject, Secretary , Fish said thnt a detailed report of the examination now taking place in Vienna, will be forwarded shortly, and nt the earliest moment the sus pension of all who shall not be im plicated will be removed.
