The following letter lint just been
published :
71) the Erfi/or *7 thr TriSi’nr:
In your report of the election of
officers of the Congregational Union,
in your pnper of Kridny Inst, it was
stated that the Kev. i>r. (leorge 11.
Bacon declined n re-election as one
of the trustees of said society, hc
enuse of his objection to Henry C.
iiown, ns tnemtier, tin 1 that I was
chosen in his place. I was not pres
ent at that meeting, nor did J know
of my own election until I saw the
report in the Tribune. Allow too to
say, therefore, that I most heartily
sympathize with the action of mi
ff icod, L>r. Bacon, and for the same
reasons Unit led him to decline a
re-election F ha Co dcclim-d to become
his successor. I ask the privilege of
this statement, because one less pub
lic might lead some to think that Dr.
Bacon stands alone. 1 believe our
churches nre with him at len-t. It
eannot he doubted that they would
prefer to have their contributions
dispensed by men of umjuestioned
Christian character.
A. li. Bradford,
Congregational Church,
Mountciair, K. J.
The Pklf Mail Hazelte finds the
origin of the recent war rumors in
the following circunintnnres: The
Versailles assembly, just before nd
journing for its last recess, passed a
bill which had been for some time
under discussion, concerning the
eadros of the French army. Infer,
Brlno- Bisninrelt sdilrosted a circular
dispatch to the diplomatic represen
tatives of Germany abroad, co.iri
plaimuftof the adoption of a measure
which was described as “calculated
to endanger ttie peace of Kurope.”
The couteuts of the dispateli were
according to instructions orally com
municated by the German represen
tatives to tile governments to which
they ur^ respecti vdy accredited. The
existence of tills dispatch was di
vulged,'and it gave rise to the reports
which have lately caused so much
idartn throughout Kurope.
