r THE RUTLAND WEEKLY HERALD: -THURSDAY, JULY 4, 18f 1. titol THURSDAY MORNING, JULY 4, 1861. Pennsylvania " Rock Oil. M. W. Kelsey, Esq., a Rutland county boy, but for many years past a resident of Pontiac, Mich., is engaged in the oil business in Pennsylva nia, and sends us, from Oil City, in that State, several samples of the oil procured from the wells in that vicinity about which so much has been said in the papers. The specimens sent are as follows : 1st Oil in natural state as taken from the wells; 2d. Naptha, used in place of tur pentine by painters, and by Druggists as a "Grease Extractor ;" 3d. Can of oil for burning in common coal oil lamps ; 4th. Oil after being distilled, but not finished and ready for burning ; 5(h. Residuum or Lub ricating oil, which is the last oil taken out of the still. . These small quantities will serve to give on some idea of what the od wells of Penn sylvania are producing ; and also an ink ling of the effect these products must event ually have on the oil trade of the country. The samples sent us are from the works of the "Michigan Rock Oil Company," Oil Creek, Pa., of which Mr. Kelsey is we believe, Su perintendent. There are, within seven miles of these works.nearly one thousand wells not all successfully worked, but yet there are hundreds that are. The Michigan Company's works nave a capacity for refining 40 barrels of crude oil in 14 hours. The can of refined oil sent by Mr. K. is, he informs us, a fair specimen of the r. lined oil, though it can be made per fectly white ; but it is not so good for bing thoroughly bleached. These specimens ol the famous Pennsylva nia Rock Oil will probably remain for a time' at our ollice, where they maybe seen by such us appreciate a knoKMy: of what our country is producing. TlIK L'Ali'niliHAKK AT Mkmio.a. A Valparaiso letter in the New York Commer cial savs that Mr. David Forbes, an English Stologist, reports that the recent teirible earthquake came from the Andes, according to his observations, having moved in a south-eat-rlv ime ; and having had a definitely marked tnvck, within the limits of which the greatest disasters were caused, while out ot that track on either side but little harm, com paratively speaking, whs done, lie states that he traeed it northeasterly for five or six days, by the fissures, upheaved rocks, inc. As those regions are almost totally uninhab ited, the opportunity for making observations, or even for knowing the damage done, is very much lessened from what would be the case in a settled and populous country. Forbes says he could find no volcano that had broken out. He says Medoza lay ex actly i:i the track, and so sustained the heaviest violence of the movement. The town will never be rebuilt on or near its for mer site. Not a house was left standing. The New York Tribune's correspondent gives the following account of an interesting scene in camp : " At a recent parade of the Wisconsin regiment, a scene of a solemn and deeply af fecting nature occtirred, which I have not before' noticed. After a regimental parade, the Colonel, Starkweather, commanded the attention of his men, and addressed them on the subject of the great cause which brought them so far from home; and, appealing to their courage and patriotism, asked if they were readv to follew him. All responded af firmatively. Hut to give full effect and for mal dignity to this resolution, he called for the colors" of the regiment, and, waving the Stars and Stripes in the breeze, he kneeled at its foot and offering up an invocation, in which the men were called upon to join, the whole regiment knelt as ne man and renew ed their fealty to their llag. There were few drveves thatwitnessed this affecting scene." There is a certain Episcopal clergyman living at Falls Church, Va., whose loyalty is suspected. The Colonel of the Connecti cut Regiment, stationed close by, set four pickets to watch the cl.-rgyman's house. Of this he complained, and asked the Colonel to withdraw them, claiming that he was loyal. A queer kind of loyalty,' quoth the Colonel. Do you pray for the President of the United States in your services on Sundays '!' 'I do not,' was the reply. 'Do you pray for Jell'. Davis V T do.'" 'A queer kind of loyalty,' quoth the Colonel again. -Rut I am com pelled to do it,' replied the clergyman. 'The bishop of this diocese commands us to pray lor the President ef the Sout.' ern confedera cy; we cannot help it.' 'Well sir,' replied the Colonel, '1 shall keep the pickets at your house until you make up your mind that your duty to your country and government is paramount "to loyalty to a rebel bishop." How Sudden the Eaktiriuake Was. A writer describing the Mendoza Earth quake says : . "The town was all peace and activity. Customer were in the shops, loungers obout the corners a bright moon shone when in five minutes the whole town was in a heap, or rather a series of heaps of ruins. The cloud of dust from the fallen walls was so dense that for half an hour the moon was in visible, an intense darkness adding to the confusion and dismay of survivors. Ere long the lurid light of burning buildings, or re mains of buildings, began to gleam. Some persons who had been buried under the walls, were still alive burning. On every hand rose cries for help. Robbery then set in. Shops and stores were scenes of unhin dered pillage. The earth at intervals was still trembling. The savage unfeeling rob bers would rob, and then kneel in prayer, crying in loud voices for mercy, and up aud at thework of depredation once again. A nun was takan out alive who had been under the ruins eight days, but she did not survive, such had been the shock to her system, and such her exhaustion. A man was actually taken out who had been sixteen days burie d under the ruins. lie had sustained a bruise on the head on which some worms had bred." A gentleman who mingled with the rebel soldiers in their retreat from Boone ville. Mo. says that the air was all alive with curse3 on the incompetency and paltroonery of the governor, and on their own folly ic being taken in by such a cowardly trickster. Castleton Items. P. Pineo, M. D., of Boston, and one of the Board of Professors in the Castleton Medical College, has received the appointment of Surgeon in the 5th Mass achusetts regiment, making two that hold Professorship in this institution, Surgeons in the federal service. At a social gathering of friends and neigh bors of some twenty persons, at the hout-e of Elisha Gates, Esq., one day last week, while at the tea table it was ascertained that of the number around the board, thirteen of them were over CO years of age, all but two of them residents in the neighborhood. Last Thursdav witnessed the re-opening of the Methodist Church, after being closed a few months tor repairsrand improvements, at an expense of seventeen hundred dollars, rendering it now one of the most pleasant houses of worship in the community. Ap propriate services were held in the presence of a large and interested congregation under the direction of Rev. Mr. Marshall, Pastor of the Church in the following order : Prayer by Rev. Mr. Smith, of Fairhaven Reading of Scriptures by Rev. Mr. Chad burnof Troy Conference Academy ; Sermon bv Rev. S. I). ISrown, of New York city. Text : Mathew xvi. lth. : " And I sav unto , , . i . i .i , tl,.,. hrt Ihnn art IVfpr. and ntmn this rock , r I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." The eloquent and learned preacher was listened to lor nearly two hours with intense intere-t. His allusions to the state ol the country near the close ot his discourse wits thrilling and soul stirring. Reliifious exercises were also held ir the eveninir and a sermon preached by the Kev. Mr. liowen of Fort Edward. During the services, at'terno'jn and even ing, excellent music wis disccursed by the choir of the church, .Mr. F. Wood of Fair haven director, with instrumental accompa niment by Miss. Filield of I'oultney. It was announced by the Pastor at the conclusion of the meeting, that the society were in debt four hundred dollars. Two hundred and fifty dollars were pledged on the spot by different individuals in sums from live to fiftv dollars each. U. W. li ITEMS. The F. F V's and the F. F. l's. A let ter from a member of Col. Corcoran's Irish Regiment says: "We have bc-n hunting secessionists all day : all I saw done was that the first families of Virginia were running away from the first families of Ireland." At the recent Commencement of Wesleyan University at Middletown, Conn., the degree of D. D. was conferred on Rev. John New man, Professor in Union College.and formerly Principal of the Troy Conference Academy at Poultney. Secretary Wells has decided to strike from the rolls the name of every na val officer who resigns in time of war, wheth er on or off duty. Miss Pamelia Cunningham, the heroine of the Mount Vernon contribution, now has a home at Mount Vernon, and is a "traitress," according to the Philadelphia Press, and in collusion with Reauregard aud others. The Charleston Mercury says that the ten rebel States will furnish one hundred mill ions of dollars and five hundred thousand fighting men. The one hundred millions will be shin plaster issues, upon the basis of cotton crops which cannot be sold. It is rumored that a petition is soon to be circulated in Connecticut, predicated on peace iloctrmes, asking ttie government to suspend hostilities against the South, or in other words, to back out. According to accounts (which we see no reason to doubt) Gov. Jackson, of Missouri fled from that State dressed in women's clothes. His appearances is represented as pitiable in the extreme : haggard, care-worn, withont appetite and drawing frequent spir itual consolation through the neck of a bot tle. Accident. Mr. A. VT. Hyde, of Hyde ville, met with a serious accident while on his way from Castleton village, on Wedes day. His horse took fright because un manageable, and ran away, throwing Mr. Hyde from the wagon, and injuring him so severely that he was insensible for several hours. Medical aid was called immediately, and at last accounts he was improving. Capt Jos. Bush, of the Brandon company, now at Newport News, has applied for a commission in the army. Hon. Hampden Cutts, of Brattleboro, is mentioned by the Phoenix as a suitable man lor Colonel ofthe Thirdd Regiment. Financial Affairs ix thb Soctii. If amy new inducements were required to consolidate our people aroind the nag, and to prepare them cheerfully to bear the bur dens necessary to carry on the war, these will be found in the melancholy moral, politi cal and financial cordition of the Southern States. Bankrupcy of the mosl unparalled character is filling every community with despair. The Ideal holders of their bonds are paid in worthless paper currency, while those at a distance, even if sympathizing with the secessionists, who have unfortunate ly invested these securities, will receive nei ther principal nor interest. All their army contractors :m paid in Treasury Notes, nud notes of interior banks that pre not receiva ble by the banks in the Southern cities, and are consequently refused bv mechanic s and tradesmen. The miserable financial The miserable financial svsem of these shameless traitors is conducted u;oh the theory of compelling all banks to redeem their notes in coin whenever these notes find their way into the traitor's treasury. This compels the planters to insist upon the gold and silver for their cotton, which they will hoard up to the end of ft he war. The Mo bile Register, of a late date, states that under these scandalous practices of the traitor lead ers, more than four millions of specie has been withdrawn from the city banks of Ala bama, and has been bnrieil, to prevent it falling into the handj of these men.
