W. Btopjied in Aspinwall only a few hours, then crossed over to Pauauia : thence wc took the steamer Alaska for San Fran cisco. She was an old boat and iu a heavy sea creaked in every joint: to my notion, she was much like an old bas ket. I must not forget to say that in Aspinwall wc saw the natives in their natural garments and that in that place as well as in Panama, there were scores of fruit venders, aud fruit war very cheap. On the voyage to San Francisco. I felt well until we got of! Cape St. Lucas, then my old tired aud worn-out feelings began to return again aud when I arrived in San Francisco I felt no better thau when I left Boston. However I did not stop long there, only a few weeks ; just to take in the city, including the Chinese quarter which of itself is quite a city, such as it is. I was bound for Los Angeles and could not thiuk of making San Francisco my home, although that is a nice city. At that time there wjl* no railroad to Los Angelea but one was in process of con traction which was completed the same year. So 1 took the steamer down the const and arrived in Los Angeles on a beautiful May morning. The air was soft and balmy ; but the city was any thing but attractive : not what it is now with its great brick and stone buildings and with its fine schools and magnificent churches. It was quite destitute of all these and many other things that have since been introduced there, as the re sult ot the great immigration wave, but the city was rich iu old adol»e*. and well populated with Mexicans. It is not - • to-day. The mighty tide of immi* gration has changed the whole aspect ot the city and made radical changes in the whole surrounding country. There tin water is as clear a- crystal and i burly alive nitii fish. Hundreds of pc ple from the main land go there y arly and pitch their tents in the ere vices of the ledges along the shores, where they stay all summer, hunting wild goats and wild sheep, fishing and getting fat. The moun tain' too are places of great attraction to seekers of pleasure. It is said that there were j<>0 campers on the Irving ton mountains last summer, and there will probably lx- many more this sea son. as preparations are lieing made to make it one of the most noted places of summer resort. This too is tin refuge of the poor invalids, especially those affected with catarrh. It is 2000 feet above the level of the sea. and it is said that no fog ever climbs to the summit o' this mountain ; no mat ter how hot the summer, it is always cool there. Before closing this letter I wish to say for the benefit of the girls who cannot find employment in the state of Maine, and those who ruin their health in the factories of Massa chusetts and elsewhere.if they will come to this country they will find plenty of employment at good wages doing house work. Wages are from fifteen to thir ty dollars per month and board, and they do not have to work hard. In fact this country is adapted to any class of good, honest and industrious citi zens. Tell them to come and burn the bridge behind them. Very truly yours, RALE’S HOHET is the best Cough Cure. 25.
