The annual sale of the Woman’s
Alliance of the Unitarian church is
being held in the remodeled church
vestry to-day. There will be a public
supper this evening at 6 o’clock.
Mrs. August Diemert of Kenil
worth, Mont., with two daughters, is
visiting her aunt, Mrs. Mattie E.
Royal. Mrs. Diemert was formerly
Miss Marion Rideout of this city.
The ladies of the Baptist church
will hold their annual Christmas sale
and supper at the vestry Friday after
noon and evening. The sale will
open at 2.30. A chicken-pie supper
will be served at 6.30.
Health Officer Woodruff has not
yet received official report of the
analyses of water taken from Branch
pond and tributaries three weeks
ago. He also reports that the water
company has not yet cleaned out the !
standpipe as promised.

Milton Frost of Lamoine pleaded
guilty in the Ellsworth municipal
court Monday, to charge of shooting
on Sunday, on complaint of Harry
Higgins. He was sentenced to fine of
$10 and costs, $2.‘15, but fine was
remitted on payment of costs.
/Edward L. Drummey and family
have closed their Ellsworth home,
for the winter, at least, and moved
to Dorchester, Mass. Chandler
Drummey, carrier on R. F. D. 1, has
secured leave of absence, and Ray
mond Camber will remain on the
route as substitute.
g'-Herbert R. Holmes has deposited
with County Attorney William E.
Whiting, $300, to be paid as a re
ward to the person giving informa
tion that will lead to the arrest and
conviction of the person making the
assault upon Mr. Holmes on Monday
evening of last week.
Prof. Grover of the University of
Maine will give an illustrated lecture
on “Mt. Katahdin,” at the high
school auditorium, next Monday
afternoon at 3. The lecture, which
will be under the direction of the
history class, will be public, but a
small admission fee will be charged
to defray expenses.
/ Fred PI. Cooke has resigned as
janitor of Hancock hall, and Free
man Wheelden has been appointed to
fill the vacancy. Mr. Cooke has
served efficiently as janitor for sev
eral years, and has been instrumental
in having many improvements made
in the hall and stage fittings. Many
regret his resignation.
Charles Allen of North Sedgwick
was arraigned in the Ellsworth
municipal court last Friday, on com
plaint of federal officers, who, armed
with a search and seizure warrant,
visited his house last Thursday night,
and found intoxicating liquor. He
pleaded guilty, was sentenced to fine
of $100 and two months imprison
ment in the county jail, with six
months additional imprisonment in
default of fine. He did not appeal,
and entered upon his jail sentence.
Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 16, the
ladies’ aid society of the Methodist
church will hold its annual sale and
supper. Supper will be served at 6
o’clock. An entertainment will be
given in the evening at 8, by C. E.
Horton of New York, who will give j
his interesting travelogue on “New
York City,” also sing a few of his
beautiful illustrated songs. Mr. Hor
ton, who is a professional enter
tainer, has been secured for this date
and gives his work under the aus
pices of the society.
E. B. Hodgkins of Trenton, the
veteran school teacher, will give an
address on “Moral and Spiritual
Education in Rural Schools” ait a
unidn service in the Baptist church
next Sunday evening. A demonstra
tion of opening exercises for public
schools will be given at the close of
the address, assisted by Ellsworth
school children. The pastors and
Supt. Turner, will assist in the ser
vices. All public school teachers and
others interested in school affairs
are especially invited. Everybody
welcome.
The third entertainment in the
lyceum course will be given at Ma
sonic hall Wednesday evening of next
week, when Miss Florence Ensworth,
reader, will appear. Miss Ensworth
is not a stranger in Ellsworth. She
is a reader who pleases by her se
lections as well as by her charming
personality. One of her greatest
charms is her absolute naturalness.
In addition to entertaining her audi
ences royally, she leaves a vital mes
sage w'hich is clear and effective.
She has an excellent program of ■
short stories.
