DO BOXERS HAVE "GOLD FEET" OR IS IT MERELY A NERVOUS STRAIN? BY T. S. ANDREWS. ' Very frequently boxing fans will be heard to remark that such and such a fighter "had cold feet" and re- ports are often sent to papers throughout the country that a certain fighter re fused to go on be. cause of "cold feet," etc. Is it really a case of "cold feet" with some boxers or a severe case of nervousness, which oftentimes brings on a sudden ill- t J ness? The split Detween Jiaaie McGoorty and his manager, Marty Forkins, has been the means of bring ing out reports that McGoorty was none too game and that he has had "cold feet" at times. It was stated that he had them when he was to have fought Frank Klaus in Milwau kee in 1910, but it is hard to believe. It is true that the night of the pro posed contest McGoorty was taken ill with fever and had a temperature of 103 or 104. Afterwards Dr. Frew ex plained to me that McGoorty was trained pretty fine and that no doubt bis fever was brought on by the nerv ous tension and strain under which he was working. There was no rea son why he should be afraid of Klaus for he had fought Hugh Kelly, at that time considered better than Klaus, and also other good men, without hav ing the least fear. McGoorty also went to England. .with Pa'tsy Callahan and fought men much heavier than himself and offered to put up big for feits, or at least Callahan did, to fight any man in the middle weight class at that time, including Billy Papke and Georges Carpentler, the French champion. , One of the greatest middle weights ever produced about the widdle west quit the game because of his extreme nervousness before a contest. That was Ted Malone, Milwaukee boy, who fought a number of battles and de feated some of the best fighters around the west during the period of 1904-5.- Malone was not only clever, but could hit like a big heavy weight, and he handled most of the middle weights he boxed with like babes. On two or three occasions he was match ed up and each time he had to call the bouts off because of illness. Give him one day's notice and take him out of the gymnasium and he would beat most any man of his weight he met. One day I asked Dr. O'Brien, his physician, the cause of his Illness and asked whether it was fear at all. "Not much," replied Dr. O'Brien. "The boy is highly nervous, especially when in training and he thinks too much of the contest in view. He keeps it in mind all the while and aa a result can not sleep. Soon his nerves give way and he is a wreck until the strain is passed. It is the same with, any highly nervous athlete and also with a horse. It is not fear or cow ardice. It is simply the nerves." And that is probably the case with most boxers when the sports say thejr have "cold feet." , EPIDEMIC AMONG HORSES. Many cases of distemper among horses and some deatha from that, cause are reported by veterinary sur geons of the city, who say the. epi demic is severe and the character of the disease very virulent. The loss to owners has been considerable. A few cases of glanders were reported during the winter, but that disease is believed to have been stamped out. MILITARY REVIEW.
