CHILDREN'S DAY AT M. E. t
CHURCH IN STRATFORD
Stratford Residents Kick Over Dust In
Stratford Avenue Young
Holmes Injured.
CSpeclal to The Farmer.)
Stratford, June 16 -At the Methodist
church yesterday Children's Day was
observed with appropriate exercises.
The classes of Mrs. Walter Hubbell,
Mrs. Harry Fairchlld, Mlsa Welling
ton, Mrs. Wallace:, Miss Mill, Mrs.
Clinton. Mrs. Olmstead, Miss Louise
Barnum and Mrs. Walter Curtis. There
was a sold by Mytt'e Bretsford and
tv marks by Rev. EJ. C. Carpenter, pis
tor of the church. Mr. Strout presid
ed' at the orgar, Mies Marguerite
Thompson played the I'ano, and Basil
Merrill and Henry Anderson assisted
with violin selections.
CUTS FOOT AND VDECKS BOAT.
Wendell Holmes, to.i of Selectman
John Holmes of South Main . etre.',
received a nasty cut on his foot Sat
urday when he slipped on a broken
bottle. The sharp frayed edge of the
broken bottle cut through his shoe
and severed a small crtery in the mem
ber. A temporary bandage was tied
around his foot and he was asslntcc!
to his home, where it was rb crted
today h; was resti-itj comfortably al
though much . weakened "by loss of
blood.
Toung Holmes was launching his
house boat on "the salt meadows at
the rear of the Henry Meachen home
on South Main street when he met
with the accident. The boat which he
was launching caught on the edge of
the creek bank as the tide was going
out and as a result It broke in two,
splitting in the middle when the water
which had been supporting it sank
away from under the end of It. So
what with receiving the bad cut on his
foot and having' his house boat wreck
ed Saturday proved a -bad luck day
for Holmes.
S. N. m T.-MOXARCHS.
In one . of the best baseball games
played In town this season the S. N.
E. T. team from Bridgeport' defeated
the Monarchs of this town by the
score of 6 to 3. The game was the
Monarch's until the beginning of the
last inning. The score at that, time
stool 4 to 3 In favor of the Stratford
boys but the telephone players rallied
strongly and managed to bring In two
runs thus winning the contest when
the Monarchs had It all but won.
BROKEN WIRE DELAYS TRAFFIC.
The working people of Stratford em
ployed in the shops, factories and " of
fices In Bridgeport were held up for
nearly an hour Saturday afternoon as
they were returning' home from work
when the trolley wire In front of the
car barns on 'Stratford avenue broke
and fell to the track. There was a lot
of "fireworks" when the live wire made
a connection with the metal parts of
one of the cars which tried to pass
beneath it while it was hanging In the
air and so apparent was the danger
of trying to run by the break In the
wire that the crew of the car de
cided to wait until the wire had been
repaired before trying to continue on
the trip. As a result all the cars
which followed were blocked and it
was some time before . the repair crew
arrived from Bridgeport and cleared
the track. ,
DUST ON STRATFORD AVENTTE.
The people residing along Stratford
avenue continue to complain because
nothing is done to relieve the dust
nuisance on that thoroughfare. Strat
ford avenue which is undoubtedly used
more than any other street in Strat
ford has not had. a drop of water
or oil sprinkled upon it this season.
As a result the dust is ankle-deep all
along the avenue from the city line
to Hard's corner. It is a menace to
the lives of the people having occa
sion to use the thoroughfare and It
was only a few days ago that a Uttle
girl, blinded , by the dust failed to
note the approach of a trolley cir.
was struck by the car and badly In
jured. Barnum avenue, Main street,
and many other streets In the town
have been oiled and it is the concen
sus of opinion of the resident of
Stratford avenue that It is about time
the selectmen took tin the matter ot
having the street treated to a coat
of road oil. ,
NERVOUS BREAKDOWN.
Mrs. J. A. Hines is confined to her
home on Stratford avenue as a result
of a nervous breakdown.
