Order-The Passing of the
"Baby Doll" ;
"The Passing of tbe Baby Doll" Is
the theme of conversation today in
that district about Water street where
beneath the flickering nieht lierhts.
forms stealthily shift from door-way
to door-way and saunter idly about
with hands in pockets. And though
"Baby" is tall and strong; was once
a dead shot, and has notches on his
gun, his downfall was accomplished
last night through "Little Black Joe"
and the "Baby's" loyalty to the trust
imposed upon bim by an absent bene
factor, i
The "Baby Doll, otherwise known
as- William Thomas, j is colored and
likewise is Joseph Edmonds, known in
underworld circles as "Uttle . Black
Joe.". In the city court his morn
ing only part of the shooting story
was told. Thomas was held1 for the
superior court under bonds of $3,000
charged with attempting to kill while
"Little Joe" was sentenced to six
months' imprisonment and . to pay $50
fine for assault and -. breach of tb
peace.
But beyond, in the section of lights
and shadows they tell a tale not upon
the legal record a. tale of romance,
deprivation, outlawry and devotion. A ,
typical tale of the water-front, where
the white, the blacky the Neapolitan
and the descendant of Aristotle meet
on equal plane. And the police cor
roborate the statements.
; The "Baby - Doll" ' walking on the
levees of New Orleans where he was
supreme aspired to laurels in New
York city. He entered Hell's Kitchen
and was on the ladder to fame when
an unfortunate affray' in 39th street
near Tenth avenue, sent him scurry
ing by the unvarnished car route to
Bridgeport. Here he soon dominated
and cleaning out the saloons and
markets by day. held sway in the
Waiters' and other clubs on State
street. He was found worthy and
trusted, but his propensity for gam
bling often found him broke in spirit
and finances. At this time he be
soueht aid from one Morano. He
was never refused and came to look
upon his foreign friend as a protector
and guide.
' Morano has a wife, Lizzie, who long
addicted to the habit of snuffing the
finely ground powder felt gay and
happy, : but lost that bloom of the
r.heelr and lustre of the eye which , so
appealed to her husband! It was de
cided that Lizzie should no longer
"hit the bing," she should no longer
on hot sultry nights inhale tne nar
eo tic which gave Mr that pleasant
sensation of slipping lightly over the
ground or go "sleigh-riding", as the
cocaine absorbtion is called in the par
lance of its users.
Yesterday Morano was called , away
and to Cora Davis in the adjoining
room he instructed his wife tt be kept
away from the wiles of the crafty
dope-distributor. Last night in tsiny
Hills' club there was, a dearth of
money. A happy thought struck, one
of ' the loungers. He owned a pre
scription and that was money, for it
can be , exchanged for actual coin,
usually two dollars. The nearest vic
tim was Lizzie, shut up In her room
and pining for 1 the drug , which in
strict obedience to thewedict was de
nied her. Several attempts to com
municate with Lizzie failed and Cora
getting worried and knowing the edict
of Morano was law sought the "Baby
Doll"; to enforce the commands. Ha
apparently did1 as Billy Hallocy, "One
eyed Bill," heard the argument with
the "Baby Doll" over a frustrated at
tempt to get to Lizzie and a few min
utes later "Little Joe" is alleged by
the officers to have put a "star" up
on his forehead.
The court testimony follows fast.
The "Baby Doll" walked over to
Cora's room, took her revolver from
a drawer and descending the stairs of
Lizzie's apartment opened fire on
"Little Joe" as he stood' in the door
way of the Nutmeg Hotel. As the
"Baby" said to Officer Benedettl who
immediately disarmed him he lost Ms
hand and cannot kill as quickly as he
once did. He fired three shots" at his
adversary, who fled within the Nut
meg, and he nearly winged' the pro
prietor, Lucca Marcantonio. At the
risk of their lives. Officers Benedetti,
McCarthy, Bray and Kane apprehend
ed the participants and witnesses,
making one, of the quickest catches
ever recorded in police annals here
and accomplished,-the passing of the
"Baby Doll," gunman and protector
of his benefactor's wife.
