APPLAUSE IN COURT.
Justice Scrutton recently imposed a
fine of $25 upon a demonstrative per
son who disturbed the proceedings
of his court in London. '- This conrse,
though unusual, is by no means with
out precedent,-nor indeed is It unnec
essary, since it is obviously, in the in
terests of justice that a eourt of law
should be a place where expressions
of approval or disapproval cannot be
permitted. . v ;V
Justice Creewell on one occasion
thought It proper even to reprove a
Jury for applauding a comment he
had passed. "I dare say you meant
it very kindly,' he observed, "but be
lieve me, the administration of Justice
is In great danger when applause in
court - becomes grateful to a judge's
ear." .
In an old treason ." trial, "Rex vs.
Stone," . the ' jury returned . -verdict-
of acquittal; 4 ThlS,we afe "?61d,--'was
gree'ted with "a great" shout fn -court,"
whereupon the chief offender was ta
ken into custody and fined $100.
At the Leeds assizes in 1893 the late
Lord Ctoleride, singling out - a youth
from a number of persons in the gal
lery who were Indulging in applause,
sent him to prison for 48 hours;
whilst In 1901, also at Leeds, Lord
Justice Kennedy singled out a noisy
person in the same way, but finally
declined to punish him on the ground
that he was not the only offender.

(Daily Consular . Report ) '.
Motion picture theatres in th Ma
drid district usually have a seating
capacity of 600 or 700, although there
are two in this city which seat 1,000.
In addition, when the regular theatres
of Madrid have, any week or period
of time for which no plays are booked
they 'fill in with ' a .-special motion
picture show.- Tz : . ' ; " "
We are told by the managers of
moving picture theatres that they en
deavor to Show from 8,000 to 3,500
metres (98.90 to. 11,500 feet) at each
performance when but two a day are
given. If there are but two sessions
per day the afternoon performance
begin at 5 to 5:30 and the evening
at 10 to ll:30r otherwise a continuous
performance beginning at 5:30 in the
afternoon and running with slight in
termissions to 1 o'clock In the morn
ing is given. -.,
Scenes from the-new -films - are
on bill boards and outside the theatre
and along the etreetes in order to
draw- patronage, but always on col
ored posters. I . . . -'". ?
The films in favor are those made
up from historical novels or incidents
such as "Quo Vadis," ' "The Three
Musketeers," "Spartacus," following
which come war, cowboy (American),
detective and intrigue : films, ' then
scenic,- comic, educational, chases, etc.
The reading matter and . announce
ments must always be in Spanish.
Many makes of films from Europe and
the United States are in use, but the
French and Italian predominate. The
only American films in great favor
are ' those showing Far West scenes,
with' cowboys and particularly In
dians. Spanish children, who form half
of the audiences, are extremely fond
of Indian scenes. Other American
films, such as comic and drama, are
considered crude in gestures and ac
tions compared- with similar films
from European manufacturers. Films
showing weekly current events all
over the world usually have one or
two American scenes.
Educational films are little used. At
the great Universities occasional ex
hibitions are given by some lecturer,
but none at the public schools. -
There are no iraJe papers devoted
to motion picture interests, and but
two manufacturers of films In this
consular district, which comprises
nearly half of Spain. Of the two.
Paths Freres take Spanish scenes of
all kinds, while the Union Cinemata
grafica takes bull fights only.
