J THE FARMER : DECEMBER 10, 1914 ri.'.n. MERCHANTS.; W01PT RESPOND IN ; VHITEVAY FETE Interest Lags, and Special Coin . mittee Finds Its Task ..; , ' Difficult. . ? Slembers of ;the Bridgeport 'Business Uen's association hired the Wheeler : & Wilson band and went on a special train, to march through the mud of New -Haven streets when the White Way. was dedicated in the Elm City but the association will have nothing ..to do with the celebration that is proj posed for the opening of the White Way in Bridgeport There 1b no city money to -pay for celebration here - and the merchants bo far iiave refused to donate any. Aldermen Stagg, 2&c Payden and Blakeslee have been ap v pointed- a -committee to arrange the celebration ; and they have called, a .meeting for this evening at seven oclock in the mayor's office. ,, , 5 Attorney Paui I Miller, who is sec retary of the 'Business Men's associa- tiori; eald : today that although the as ' sociation ' has considerable money in its treasury,-the sentiment of the as- - sociation was opposed - to sperwling anv of it for hiring a band or for tak- ' ing part in any celebration. Ha said the members (felt that if anything ,of the . kind was done the business men in the- section where the White Way is ' located o,uht to pay for it. Former State Senator : Joseph - H. " Whltcomb, who is president of the business Men's association, is in favor Of the celebra ' tioii and thinks the association ought . to take part. -- ,- ' -. .' ' . Alderman Stagg is not in favor of any elaborate -celebration because the time is so short. -The White Way is -" supposed to be ready to operA oni Oe ' cember 15. The celebration committee wants the" affair to be on that night v or either of the next, two nights fol lowing. Alderman Stagg has outlined a -plan W have the .mayprat city hall -push a button throwing -on the lights and then a short parade of 'the city officials with -a platoon of police, band, 1 guest and business men. ."His line of - march would be the White Way itself and the parade, to end. at the Strat field Jiotel -where dinner, win. be served , . at $1.60 per plate... , -.f .-. yi -.f, Some of the ether city1 officials' Who have interested themselves in secur ing the White,; Way are not atifled with this plan -for the opening f ' the "bright light."- They think if the Business- Men jparaded in New. Haven they ouglit'te- be- willing , to- parade here. They : also think that thp Coast , Artillery corps companies,: the Naval . Reserves, and the band and hospital corpe should Varade, also all the uni " formed societies who . care to Joia. ;! 1 A proposition; has . een mads - to. make the celebration of a, Mardi.-Graa character; and tb offer, prizes for "the handsomest-, male, J costume, haniiwm est -:"aroan' costume, most grotesque " costume, etc. The - committee believe" - the Coast Artillery Corps: band "and : the Wheeler & Wilson band as swell as ' other organizations ; should I give their services free, for that night. .The musicians are not . in raw ol .mtxch- lng and " playing for nothing. An ef fort, will be made to have the mer chants along the White Way decorate their stores in keping with the holiday spirit, but at present the effort for the White ' Way celebration is rather labored and there is a possibility un less more interest is shown that the proposition Will fizzle out entirely. NO POIJC APPOINTMENTS TJTfTHj NEXT WEEK, AND 1 PERHJPS NOT THEN President Geoorge S. Hill of thef police board today denied that any appointments were made to the police force at the last meeting of the po lice commissioners. A rumor to this effect gained much credence on the streets today. Commissioner Hill said that o appointments would be made befor the r meeting 'of Dec. 15 and there was a possibility that the ap pointments would not be made even then. " .-.-,..-, .
