MARKET LETTER
' Any on -who wa fortunate enough

hu, Root made hie powerful .speech
on "Traitors at Home" could not but
hare toe en Impressed with 'the solem
nity, and sinoerity, . earnestness and
f orcetulnesa with which he warned his
fellow countrymen of the dangers we
are facing here among ourselves.
When he said, "There are men In this
city who should be shot at sunrise,"
he directly referred to the danger of
nro-German bropaganda in' America.
Am hs said; these men are doing their
Work under false pretense, 'TThey
are pretending to be for, the country
and are lying- every flay and in every
word.1-; They are covering themselves
with a cloak of pretended American
ism. 'Bat if we are competent and lit
for ov liberty. we will find them out
and get' at .them." The former .Soc
ialist, Charles Edward Russell,, who
was one of the Root Mission to Rus
sia, was also most emphatic in his de
nunciation of pro-Germttnlsm In this
country. The labor representative of
the Mission was, likewise emphatic on
the necessity for suppression of trea
ann at home. Here are men In differ
ent walks of life who are undivided
In their loyalty, uncompromising to
ward, traitors at home. Let us taice
heed of the warning Mr. Root . has
given us, and do ear part In exposing
treason and disloyalty wherever we
find it It la time, for all of us to cat.
Each, can do his bit at home even If
ha cannot xo to the front with the
vounc men of our Nation who person
ally seek the enemy on tire battlefield.
I While stock trading sentiment has
,been momentarily affected to a small
extent during the week, the underly
ing technical of the stock market has
proved its strength under attack on
unsettling news. : The market Is pro
professional and such Is subject to
sodden-narrow chamjes.: The Vatican
peace overtures following the Bethle

fixlntr agitation have furnished " the
bears with soma ammunition, -but it
has not been very effectives There Is
hardly any doubt that the great bank

to prevent any unsettling tendencies

f Steel and copper circles are more
hopeful of fair treatment in the mat
ter of price-fixing. The Washington
authorities are reported to- be reyis-

nection, due to a recognition of the la
bor scarcity. It Is .beginning to be bet-
ter understood that to have large war
revenues there must first be large war
profits: "-The liberal and cheerful Oov

Conduct of the war from an industrial

The Pope's peace overtures are pot
" considered In financial circles as likely

looking toward an early ending of the
war. The American Congress Is to be
asked to vote nine billion more war

a much-needed common labor supply.
Neither EllhU Root nor B. H. Gary
expect the war to end soon. Ainea

STOCK MARKET S
- - -
New York, Aug. 21 The usual Ir
regular accompanied today's early
dealings in the stock market. Rail
roads were firm, although New Haven
fell half a point to the new low mark
of 82. Oils and shippings were the
strongest feature. Mexican Petro
leum gaining two points with 1
each for Texas Co. and Atlantic, Gulf
& West Indies. Bethlehem and Cru
cible Steels fell a point but United
States Steel was more steady, with
coppers. J " . :; -.
Prices reacted all around later on
heavy selling of steels and railroads.
New Haven established a new low of
80 1-4 and Delaware & Hudson also
sold at Its lowest auotation. 101 -1-8.
Shippings and oils virtually surren
dered all gains with general unsettle-
ment at noon. i-
