village incorporated under the laws
of this State, and of any town with
in this State, shall have power at
any loul meetinj; of the leal voters
of such village or town called for
that purpose, to t'Uthorie the trus
tees or bailiffs! of such village, or
selectmen of such town, to pur
chase, or erect, nnd maintain at the
expense of such village or town,
one or more lockups or jail, for the
purpose of confmiiiH; therein any
person under arrest for any offense
against the lawn of this State, until
the final hearing, or examination, or
trial of such person before a justice
of the peace; and said lockup or
jail shall be under the charge of
said trustees or bailiffs of such vil
lage, or select men of such town, or
some person by them appointed for
that purposed
