I. V POETRY. ADVERTISEMENTS. ADVK11TI8 K 51 KNT8 I ADVERTISEMENTS. ADVKRTISEMENTS. ADVERTISEMENTS. r How to put up Wool Jlr. Doalass Oliter, a woolen manu facturer iu Grant county,-Wis., conitau uicatea to tbc Lancaster Herald the fol lowing adrice to wool growers All dry burrs which tttach themselves to wool should be exterminated from tho pastures before the sheep aro turned on them in the spring. TAGQINQ. To save wool, and add to tho health and comfort of tho sheep, they should bo tapped beforo they are turned out to grass in the spring. This is done by cutting away tho wool around tho vent and tho in side" of tho thighs. Sheen, especially ewes which havo not lambed, should be handled carefully, and laid on their sides whib the operation is performed. TIME AND MODE OF WASHING. It is generally held by those who have tried it, that early spring is preFerablo for washing sheep, if they can bo subsequent ly housed in case of severe storni3 or un usually cold nights. As early washing is improper ia cold climates, it is urged that sheep should bo shorn unwashed. This is a question upon which sheep grow ers should bo allowed to exerciso their own judgment, nor should any buyer at tempt to compol washing, or to tako ad vantage of its omission by insisting upou a particular and fixed rate of shrinking on unwashed wools. The shrinkage on every lot should be proportioned to its ac tual condition, as deduction is made on wheat and other products, or on foreign wools which contain impurities. CUTTING HOOFS. "Merino sheep generally require to have their feet trimmed at least once a year. Some do this at washing, when their feet aro clean and soaked soft, others immedi ately after shearing. SHEARING. Shearing should tako place when the oily feeling matter termed yolk has so far appeared in the wool as to give it its natural brilliant appearance and silky feeling. The mode of shearing cannot be described here in detail. The woolshould be cut off evenly and smoothly reasonably close, but not leaving the skin bare and red, which renders the sheep very liable to receive injury from the cold. "Stub ble shearing" and trimming," te, leav ing the wool long so as to give the appear ance of extraordinary length, or leaving it loag ia places in order to afFect the ap parent shape of the animal, are both frau Is. DOING UP THE WOOL. Tho fleece should be a3 little broken in sheariug as possible. It should be gath ered up carefully, placed upon a smooth table instJe ends down, in the exact shape in which it comes from the sheep, and pressed close together. If there are dung balls, they should be removed. Fold in each side one quarter, next the neck and breach one quarter, and the fleece will then Le in an oblong square foim, some twenty inches wide and twenty-five or thirty inches long. Then lold it once racre lengthwise and it is ready to be Tool ed up and tied or placed ia the press. The improved wool press, worked by a Jever or by a crank, does the work far Eioreexpedtiously, better, ondwithmuch less labor than doing it by hand. Three bands of moderate sized twine, flax, or hemp, free from all loose fibre, once around, are enough fjr the fleece. It is fraudulent to put the unwashed wool of sheen that have died from disease, or of those that have been killed, or unwashed tacrs, into washed fleeces. It is aL-o fraud ulent to sell burred fleeces, so done up as to cenceal the burrs, without giving no tice to the buyer. The burred wool should be put by itself, so that the buyer can -open and examine it. STORING WOOL. "Wool should be stored in a clean, dry room, tight enough to keep out dust, ver min and insect3. - How General 3Ieagiier Fell. The San Francisco Monitor has received from Montana the following authentic particulars ot General Meagher's death, which it publishes the-more willingly, it says, as reports injurious to the memory of the dead have already been circulated, even in some journals, asserting that he committed suicide while under the influ ence, of wild exeitemect: General Meagher, as hi3 friends can testify, was never subject to such parox ysm3, and in a letter written only a few hours before his melancholy death, he spoke cheerfully of his expected return home ia the course of a few dav3. He had ridden some thirty mi!e3 on horse back, across the dry plains to Eort Ben ton, and ia conversation with a friend a short time before his death, exhibted no appearance of excitement. He after wards wrote home to his family, and be ing fatigued, retired to a state-room on the steamboat for the night, as there are no 'hotels at Fort Benton. The guard rails ot the steamer had been partially broken away a short time before, so that there was none ia front of this state-room. About 10 p 31 he got up and stepped out on the deck ia his night clothes. In do- iua so, hi3 foot struck asainst a coil of rope, which made him stumble, and be ing unable to recover balance, he fell in to the. river, hica runs with great rapid lty. come 01 tne . uec&v nanas ran up with lights at ; the noise of his fall into the water, but only in time to see him swept away by the rushing waters, ia wjbioh he disappeared ere an effort could be nade to save him. In the Paris Exposition, at an English jeweler stall are some diamonds so finely cut that by mere pressure the air excluded rom the surface oi the atone iu contact with the cla.s, and in thw way they ad here to the under stuo of tho glas in the showcase, although they seem to be lying outside. A woman who thought they were scattered loosely on the surface re cently tried to steal them by throwing her pocket handkerchief over them carelcsMly while she was apparently looking at some thing eke. Those who noticed her were amused by her surprise and chagrin when she found that the diamonds were not to be swept off. OUli AGENTS.
