Bovles. The IIarrisbcrg Homicide. Yesterday at 1 p. M.t the trial of Ellas Keeney for killing Wm. Pelton at Har risburg on January Slst, came on,. and the following gentlemen were empan neled as the jurors: S. W. Crowder, Jos. Moist, Ellis Knox, Jason Wheeler, J. M. Churchill, Silas Halght, Martin Luper, J. R. Smith, Lewis Cox, Jacob Nye, S. Dawson, Jesse Archibald. The examination of witnesses for the pros ecution was still in progress last night, and as there are something near seventy-five witnesses subpoenaed in the case, the trial will probably oocupy the rest of the week. The case excites uni versal interest in this community, and the vast auditorium of the court room is constantly crowded with spectators, straining every faculty to take in the details of the testimony. Mr. Helm assists District Attorney Humphrey in the prosecution, and Jessrs. Dryden, Whitney, Williams and Strahan ap pear for the defense. A Severe Lesson. A young hood lum of this city was last week arrested for disturbing religious services at the M. E. Church, on the previous Sabbath evening, by whispering, laughing, moving about, etc., and upon trial and conviction in Squire Carothers Court, was fined $15 and costs, in default of which he was sent to the county Jail. After he had remained over night in the "hotel de cross-bars" his friemls paid his fine and secured his release. Rev. C. TT. Shaw was the prosecuting witness. 'Squire Carothers seems to be a healthy peace Commissioner in these cases of hoodltinjim. It is to be much regretted that j-oung boys should discrrace their parents and offend peace able church goers in this way, and we trust this wholesome lesson will he a warning to this youth as well as to others who have heretofore been equal ly as bad, if nofworse than himself. The Railroad Cases. A civil action which attracted a great deal of attention at the present term of Circuit Court, was that of, Ben. JZblladay against various parties in this city and Jarrisburg, for the collection of sub scriptions made by defendants in con sideration of the completion of the rail road to Albany and Harrisbnrg. The suit was conducted on the part of the plaintiff by E. C Bronough, and on the part of the defendants by Jlessrs. Helm, Strahan, Johns and Tandy. The defendents filed a demurrer to plain tiffs complaint, upon which able and exaustive arguments were made by opposing counsel, and his honor, Judge Bonham, after taking the case under advisement for several days, overruled the demurrer of defendants, which is a virtual opinion in favor of the le gality of plaintiff's claims A Sad Death. Miss Sarah Sender, a neice of Mr. Sternberg, of this city, died at his residence last Monday, after a few days' illness. Only a few short -weeks ago her troth was plighted to Mr. Isaac Senders, of Junction city, and the bans had been duly published i n conformity to the Israelitish custom. The young couple were to have been united in holy wedlock about the middle of the current month; but cruel death has snatched the fair maiden from her loyer's embrace and made her nuptial couch the narrow sepulchre. On Tuesday morning the bereft bride groom and other friends accompanie the remains of the deceased maiden fc Portland where they were interred ac cording to the ancient rites of Israe litish burial. The Damage Srrr. A civil action which attracted much attention at the current term of Circuit Court was that of G. W. ZTall vs. C. O. Barnes, claim ing ten thousand dollars damages for physical injuries inflicted in a personal rencontre. The trial lasted about twenty-four hours and the jury, after about six hours' deliberation, returned a verdict in favor of the. plaintiff ,iu the sum of one dollar damages. This virtually throws the plaintiff in the costs of suit, and is a victory . for de fendant. Messrs: Powell & Flinn and Chenoweth appeared for the- plaintiff, and Messrs. ' Helm, Humphrey and "Williams for defendant. ' ' : A Leap fob Life. Last r itfbnday as 3essrs; 'Ximrod and Curtis Price were walking along the railroad bridge which . spans Fisher's creek, a few miles " below Albany, they were so nearly overtaken by the upward bound freight train, as to be eompeljed to jump from the bridge to the bed of the creek below, which they did just as the hot breath , of the locomotive steamed against their faces as the train thundered by. This was a close call for our friends one which we can hardly 'contemplate , without a shud der of horror. - - ; - ; R. Cheadle . shipped 1 by "Ajax" 2,320 dozen eggs. He is in receipt of an invoice of new goods to which we direct the attention of the public. He is an enterprising and reliable business man with whom it Is a pleasure' to trade. On last Saturday morning, a little be fore daylight, the City Hotel, of Cor vallis, was burned down, and Me. John Murray, of Junction city was burned up In the building. Deceased was the brother of Edward Jlurray, proprietor of the Exchange Hotel of this city He was also father-in-law of A. R. McConnell, landlord of the burnt ho tel. Other parties Including Me. Mc Connell and his family had but Just time to escape from the burning build ing in their scanty night rober. The fire was so far progressed when d!s novered that all of those occupying upstairs apartments were compelled to Jump from the windows In order to save themselves. It is thought the unfortunate Mr. Murray was suffocated in the smoke while attempting to reach a window from which to escape. The fire is supposed to have originated in a lamp-room In the, center of the build ing. Adjoining buildings were saved by extra exertions of the fire depart ment, without much damage. Loss estimated at $5,000; insured lor $1,500. Returned. In the list of passen gers by the AJax from .San Francisco we notice the name of A. Wheeler of the firm of A. ll'heolcr & Co. at Shedd Mr. IPheeler has been engaged for sometime in selecting goods for the store at Shedd; and those who are accustomed to visit the establishment need not be told that the stock will be found full in all its departments. The new members of the firm have brought a large addition to the capital and we shall look to see a eorresjwnd Ing increase in the stock and business. - For the Ladies. If "a thing of beauty is a joy forever," Mrs. S.' A Johns, Albany's fashionable milliner, has a store full of perpetual happiness in the line of hats, bonnets, ribbons, laces, collars, artificial flowers, and all else that go to make up a complete lady of the period. ITer Spring styles j of hats are especially attract! the "Forest City" being an exquisite pat tern, and the "Grand Duchess" the ne plus ultra of "agony." Don't forget to call early and get the cream of her selections. Albany Scientists. It is said that some of the bright young men of Al bany, who go to see the girls, have adopted a new and novel method of getting kisses. They assert, on the authority of scientific writers, that the concussion produced by a kiss will cause the flame of the lamp to flicker, and easily induce the girls to experi ment in the interest of science. The first kiss or two the particss watch the flame to see if it flickers, but soon be come so Interested in the experiment as to let it flicker if it wants to. Guess Not. The Oregonian will have to locate these Jokes somewhere else, they are not applicable to this latitude: "A Linn county farmer laughed himself almost to death, not long ago, to see a chicken thief try to climb a fence with bis knees full of buckshot." "Albany boasts of a young man so timid that he cannot look a needle in the eye. .Many young' ladies are troubled with similar fears when they can get any one else to do their sew ing." Retcrsed.
