ment of the programme, no piece

Mr. Gladstone, in reply , to the
latest question put to him on the

A Spanish gentleman frequents the
Paris Boulevards in thin alpaca
clothes and straw hat. He is earning
a bet of 50,000 francs to dress in
that way all winter. He is lucky not
to have undertaken it in Canada.
A young lady at an Ohio camp
meeting asked for the prayers of the
assembly because she could not set
her eyes upon a certain young man in
her neighborhood without feeling as
though she mast hug him to death.
Negroes in Indiana are calling in
dignation meetings and demanding
the repeal of the law udder which
one of their color has been sent to
prison for marnrinsr a white woman.
It is only a matter of taste after all.

A San Francisco widow keeps the
skull of her deceased husband in a
glass case. She once remarked to a
friend who was viewing the remains:
"Alas! how often have I banged
these bones with a broomstick. I am
sorry for it now." r
A new Western leading literary
star is described as a tall, pale-faced
young man, witn wandering eyes, a
graceful figure, a deep bass voice,
and the polish of a gentleman. For
a Western crayon picture this is
pretty well drawn.
"May I leave a few tracts?" asked
a meaical missionary of a lady who
responded to his knock. "Leave
some tracks? Certainly you may,"
said she, looking at him most benignly
over her specks, "leave them with the
heel toward the house, if yoa please."
Mr. Charles Town Fowler, a Lon
don reporter who died lately, had
given his attention during thirty
years singly to the writing of ac
counts of fires. He pursued hi3 pe
culiar line of reporting with so much
earnestness that, it is said, he liter
ally lived upon a fire engine.
Kettle-drum parties are becoming
fashionable in Washington. They
are of English origin, and imply an
' entertainment where bread and batter
and tea are the only refreshments
offered.
Oswego colored conversation: "I
say, Baz, where do dat comet rise
at?" "It rise in de forty-six merid
ian ob do frigid zadiac, and laid
down in the comic almanac."
' "Well, where does it set, Baz?"
"Set, yoa black fool! It doesn't set
. nowhere. When it gels tired of shin
ing it goes into its hole."
A German preacher near Dayton,
who objects to his congregation
chewing tobacco in church, requested
them to leave their "cuds out of
doors on a fiat rail, in a fence corner,
-under the steps anywhere, for there
would be no danger of the birds,
geese, hogs, or anything eating it or
carrying it away."
As Dr. John Camming was lately
about to begin a lecture on "The
Pope and His Work in England,"
at Folkestone, he was given a tele
gram from London announcing the
death of the Holy Father. The
lecture was cosequently "toned
down," but when the lecturer dis
covered the hoax his indignation
reached a high pitch.
A mentionable old lady died in
Newburyport, Mass., last week.
This was Mrs. Abigail D. Cook. She
died on the 73d anniversary of her
wedding, and in the same room in
which she was married. Singularly
enough her age is not given, but she
was one of the choir which sang at
the welcome to Gen. Washington on
his visit to Newburyport, and she
also sang at the commemorative ser
vices on the occasion of the General's
death. She was the mother of nine
children, and for sixty-five years a
member of the church. She is said
to have been a very handsome wo
man in her prime, and she retained
her Bprightlinesa to the last.
A New Hampshire clergyman, who
upon being asked his price by a
young man whom had just been mar
ried, replied that the law gave him
$2. " The young man promptly hand
ed out fifty cents, remarking, "Well,
that will make up $2.50 for you,"
, and before the astonished man could
explain matters he was off with his
bride on his honeymoon.
The last thing out the yoting'to
each Congressman $5,000. This, in
the aggregate, makes $1,585,000 voted
to themselves, by passing an uncon
stitutional law. This is quite a little
snra to steal from an overtaxed
: people. It borders upon iJ the Credit
Mobilier steal. , -
