Avery similar ease was revealed at
an inquest held in August, in Bury, on i
t lie body of Annie Riley, an infant nine
tuaatheold. The mother, Klten Klley,
a poor widow, had been left in great
want by the father of tbe child, with
whom she had been living. She was
unable to pay for her lodgings and she
bad no fond. She went to tbe relieving
office at Elton, and he told her to come
next day, as that was not tbe day tor
new appltaatlooti. Being thus turned
Hwa-y, she found herself In such a state
of destttMlien that bite went into a res
ervoir to drawn herself and tbe child.
A Iter going Into the water, site became
horrified and fcramMetl out, but could
go no farther. A verdict of "willful
murder" was returned.
Can it be said tbat women have all
the rights they want -when, in R so
called Christian land, men who have
w rouged and deserted them are never
called to accouut, while they are left to
choose between the work-house, the
grave, the scaffold or the convict's cell ?
We venture to suggest to tbe com
missioners who are preparing the re
vised criminal code W consider whether,
since "provocation" is held to be a suf
ficient cause to reduce Ibe crime of kill
ing a woman especially a wife from
murder to manslaughter, a provision
might not lie introduced to render "des
titution" available as a similar plea
