CLOSING EXERCISES.
As was indicated in the "l‘mt" oil
the 20th, the closing exercises at. tlia“
University canic oti yesterday after ‘
noon, and were witnessed and on.
joyed by a large nnmhcr of the par-i
ents and friends of the students in‘
attendants. The programme was so
long that we have not room to pnli
lish it in full, but cannot refrain from
mentioning the names of some oi
those who participated in the cxer
cises. All did well, but those we
mention excelled themselves. After
singing by the school and scvern'
rccitations, Miss Bell Gitford rccitm ,
in a distinct, clear voice, “Annie am
VVillie’s Prayer,” which was followei
by the reading of a paper—the “Chip
Basket”—edited by Miss Addie J.
Chambers and Carrie \Vhite, read
by Clarence “'hite. and which con
tained many good things. The reci
tations by Miss Addie George, Jas.
H. Hill, Ed. Smithers, Luella Wit
tenmeyer, and the reading by R,
Crawford, Miss Emma “’eller and
Miss Rosa Downs, were all good——
especially so with the reading by the
last named young lady. G. H. Jud
sou’s original poem was quite good?
and created much nierriinent. All}
acquitted themselves creditahly, and ‘
the entire programme was executed‘
satisfactorily. ‘
In conclusion, Prof. Anderson 1
presented a gold pen to little Emmai
Collins and a napkin ring to Fannyi
Robinson for greatest proficiency in}
writing. The Prof. stated that 125‘
scholars were in attendance, and that
113 were examined—the remaining
12 being recent arrivals. Eighty
pupils passed above seventy in ex
amination. The gold watch was giv
en to Miss Luella Wittenmeyer, and
the dictionary to J. H. Judson, each
having received the highest average
in their studies of the entire school,
and obtaining the same standing—
-98 per cent. Judge Burke presents
ed the valuable gifts to the success
ful competitors in a most happy and
graceful manner. The Judge con
gratulated the city upon the flourish
ing and prosperous condition of the
University, the necessity and high
importance of fostering the educa
tional interests of the community,
and the great benefits springing
from such an institution. Mr. Burke
closed his remarks by giving the two
successful competitors excellent ad
vice concerning the necessity of con
tinued exertion, perseverance and
integrity.
The exercises closed with drill by
the cadets and the University caosei.
for a two weeks' vacation—Post.
