PUGET SOUND ARGUS. ALLEN \‘H-IIIL Editor and Proprietor 'I'HURSIMY. MARCH ‘3O. 187‘.) WALKS ON TEMPERANCE. “Woouumnlmlhnt glwm 111 l neigh bor «11-Ink." How to Have Good Lodge Meetings. Think about it through the week. Determine upnn something which You will present. to make the meet ing a goml one. Be at. the lodge-room ten minutes before the time for commencing and see the: regalia, rituals, gnvels, cards. etc., are all in their preper places. li. spoils a lodge meeting to have to make preparations for it after it has commenced. Commence when the time comes for commencing. Push matters along briskly up to the time of the recess. Very much of the gen-ml success of the treating depends upon not wasting time at this pm of the evening. Put espe 9i|l cure upon the initiatory cere mony. Make the recess about fifteen min utes long. See everybody in the room. Let no one go unnoticed. Seek out the quiet ones or strangers and make them feel at home. Transact the business of the Lodge from recess to the "(300d of the Or der” in a business like way. Don’t throw away time in quibbling over technicalities, but don’t be impatient when members want to say what they think. It is everybody’s right to talk. Talk is the safety valve which oftentimes saves an ex plosion. Respect honest opinion, although it does not coincide with yours, and abide by the decision of the majority, although it is not the way you wanted it to be. The programme for the “Good of the Order” must be arranged at re cess. Don’t undertake to stumble along without a programme. The ditferent parts need arranging into a symmetrical whole. If any one is to be called upon let him know it in ad vance. 0n the other hand don‘t call upon one who has not consented to respond. Invite every one to par ticipate, no matter what his accom~ pliahments may he. The Lodge must not get the impression that there are only three or four who are qualified for service under the “Good of the Order.” The success of the meeting and the strength of the Lodge de pends upon the number who came into active work. Close when the time comes for closing, and thot time should in no can be more than two hours and a hnlf from the time of commencing. It may b 0 impossible to hear all who have consented to participate in the Good of the Order, but never mind. ltis of more importance that the meeting should close by a given time than that all should he. heard in one evening. Shut down at :1 rec sonably early hour, and all hands will go home feeling that they haw on joyed the evening. and will be rvatly to commence at the right time next week. A movement is in progress in the town 01‘ Olympia to induce Dr. J. W. Watts to come to that place and lec ture again on Temperance. It is de~ aigned to pay his expenses to and fro. In Pennsylvania, since our report oflnst month from this State, nine G. T. lodgos have been organized. In Missouri, sixteen lodges organ. izod is the record for Decembermnd for the month of January, twelve. In Wisconsin, {rot—nilkcjmnn unry lOlh, twelve new lodges institu ted, three teorganized. IT seems there was a partial mis understanding about, the time for holding the next session of our Grand Ludge. Arrangements will perhaps be made to have the session commence on the 51-10051) Tuesday in June instead of the first Tuesday. FEARFUL FLOOD.—A London dis patch lrom Szegedin, dated March 12th, says: After a fearful night of anxiety all efforts proved useless and the water broke through with im mense force at three o’clock, carry ing aways part of the railway sta tion, the embankment. Within three hours the town was many feet deep in water. Shrieks and cries from thousands are heard, houses are crashing by the score. and in many cases carrying their tenants with them. God knows what we shall do to-night. There is no gas, the works being 15 feet in water, and I fear We shall run short of food. One boat was just going to save a large house full of people when a fearful crash carried with it the whole living freight. The scene is simply heart rending. Over 80,000 people are out of house and home, hundreds are drowning, and the water is still rising rapidly. A later dispatch from Pesth gives an additional ac count of the loss of life in and about Szegedin. Rescuing boats contin ually strike runs so that in many cases to rescue the sufferers is im. possible. A host capsized by Awhich seven women were drowned. A vi olent storln is raging and the flood is continually rising. Unsubmerged area has been reduced to 600 square metres, which continually decreases. At the first hirruption of the water thirty-five soldiers were drowned. The government authorities report 301) persons have already been drowned. At noon Thursday there were still persons on the roofs of houses and in the Cold. Six thous- and persons are still surrounded by water. NEGRO INDEPENDENCE—A cor respondent oays: “Four or five hundred negroas from South Caro line are in Washington, and will start for Idaho in three weeks to lo cate lands and Work on the railroad from Boise. 'l‘ranspurtntion is pro vided, and they understand well that they will be taken care of till they can stand alone, through the efforts of Senator Bruce and other 'Con gi'esmnen. This is the first. of a large number to follow and establish colonies, and Senator Bruce thinks itan exwllent beginning of negro independence and manly aell’ sup port.” RAH.WAY.—TIte sum of $600,000 is set down in the Canadian esti mutes for railway construction in British Columbia. during the present your. The amount is small and will disappoint everyone; but half a lost is better than no bread. The route that will be adopted is not stated. Let us join with our cotemporury in hoping that the amount will he spent for the purpose {or which it is naked. —“L‘oluuist.” __ - . .. . ‘ ‘r ‘ r.
