OS A BIG SCALE—During our visit to lrondnle last Saturday we had occasion to visit the charcoal works carried on by our sherifl'. Mr. B. S. Miller. We found him doing businesi on a large scale. At that time he had 13 pits burning. containing 912 cords of wood, enough for nearly 50,- 000 bushels of coal, besides more pits in course of preparation. He had 26 white men and S Chiuamen at work in hiscamp. besides a cook. and 36 Chinnmen cutting conlwood—about 70 hands all toij. They can and put up about 70 cords of wood per day, and work 7 horses, 2 mules and S oxen. The charcoal turned out is all used at the furnace, in smelting are. Mr. Miller seems to be doing a thriving busi uess. Br the recent trauster of the P. S. S. ] Nay. Co.'a steamers and other property to l the 0. R. & N av. Co., it would seem that 1 ! Capt. Star is out of the steamboating bus-‘ iness on Puget Sound, and that the Vii-1 lard party are aiming ata monopoly ot the carrying trade of the northwest. It is suggested. however. that we will have‘ better accommodations and more satiaiac tory service as a result of the change. It so. lew will regret it, of course.
