If this committee can agree upon a system which, in their judgment, will be an im- | provement upon the old system, then let it be recommended to the States for their adoption. If they cannot so agree, let Mr. Johnson insist upon retaining the la boi of these negroes as the only safety for the bondholder, and the only means by which there is the slightest chance of upholding the credit of the Government." . The quotation above contains the whole ! gist of the proposed " adjustment." Poor j Cuffy is to lay ofl' his coat and supplicate King Cotton to pay the expense of the little fracas kicked up by his master. What remarkable disinterestedness is dis played in the matter! We may talk ngainst negro suffrage and negro equality until we are blind, and those schemes will i find no more practical aids to fulfillment than are the promulgation of just such ab surd threories as the above. No wrong act is followed with surer or more humili ating effects of retributive justice than that of persecution. The negro, by the at tempts of Southern masters to rivet still more firm the shackles, has secured his freedom. Let those who sneer, not alone at the negro, but nt the " greasy mechan ic" of the North, heed the warning, or their own impetuous acts may make Sam bo their equal before the law, as he is now in the eyes of humanity, degraded and ig- ' norant as we find him. What the handful! ' of radicals of either extreme expect to ac complish by their course, except mischief, 1 is beyond our ken. The war has effectu ally destroyed slavery, has placed the ne.
