A N"HW THKORY CONCERNING TJIE AUTHORSHIP OF SHAKESPEARE.—A St. Louis correspondent writos: "In a dismal den of au office on Chestnut street has Nathaniel Holmes, Esq., now Judge of the Supteme Court of this State, for tho past fifteen years been studying and preparing a book to prove that tho plays of Shakespeare were written by Lord Bacon.' Judge llolmos has in his possession certain letters never before published, which are calcu lated to throw considerable proba bility in his favor. Tho following interesting piece of history, not generally known, bears upon the goint. When Lord Bacon was olicitor General, prior to his ap pointment as Attorney Geueral, he was requested by his Majesty to pre fer charges against Lord Essex. Among other allegations there was one declaring 4 that he was tho au thor of a certain seditious play en titled Richard, calculated to excite discontent and riot among good and loyal subjects.' Bacon declined prosecuting the charge, using the following significant language: 4 Whereas, it hath been bruited about thut I myself am the uuthor of said play of Richard, it would therefore be exceedingly unseemly in mo to prosecute him for that which is charged upon mo,' so that even in Bacon's day the theory was prevuletn. I understand the work will bo issued by tho Riverside press in the course of a month or so. ".a it surprising that infidels and scoffers at religion should increaso when the example of worldliness is set by some of tho most devout professors of Christi anity ? We respect the man who consci entiously professes to follow in the foot prints of the " meek and lowly" One, whose life our guide should be. You can make each oat aa you »r«< fit of thia opinion. In gnat haste, Your obedient servant. C. C. HEWITT, Chief Justice of W. T. Why Will Ye Lie! The Rebel Organ on Chinook Street ■ays : 1 " But when the hour arrived for the j Convention to aasemble, cot a second waa | lost in perfecting an organisation, and at a time when not one in ten of the delegates l from the outside precincts were in the ! room." ! And why was " not a second lost in j perfecting an organisation"? You ac ! knowledge " the hour had arrived." \ Now the reason of the precipitate action | was, it was learned from perfectly relia ble authority that Mr. Crosby waa to be ' put in the chair vi et annit , and it was ' further known that Mr. Crosby had aaid Ihe was in favor of ruling ont the town 1 delegation and the bogna delegation to gether. We can prove he did so atate, if ho wishes us to do so. by Mr. Rhoids and Mr. N. Crosby, Jr., —good authority. , The organization would have been quite I ni hastily " perfected," if it had been ' delayed until all were in. The country ' delegation numbered eight from Mound, ' eight from Tumwater and five from Cham 1 bcr's priarie precinct—twenty-one in all. ; Yclm and Black River had held no con ventions. Tou say " not one in ten of | (he country members " were in the room, 1 when the organization was "perfected." ' Figure again: Six were •• in," or rep* { resented —four in person and two by : proxy—from Mound; three were "in" ] from Chambers—all in person—(and we lolieve two or three from Tumwater, but we will, only count them we know to have been there positively—that'a nine. If you do not misstate the matter, then the country delegation should have numbered at least ninety to have one for every ten. You should have ataied the organization waa perfected when just one in two and a third were in. and leave ont the word " not" at that. Figures won't lie, any way you can fix it. The fact waa, an effort waa made to rule the convention by the Pick wick Club, or else to break it np. We did just what that they contemplated doing, as fnraa the organization waa concerned, after the hoar " had arrived," and it is a bone of a different color. He too, atanda aquarely upon our Platform, but hia personal popularity ia so great he will catch votes from all parties. Mr. Williams, for Treasurer, ia the choice of three fourtha of the Union voter* of the county. He is both capable and reaponsible, and we know of no man to whom we would more cheerfully entrust the county funds, and who will give a better account of his stewardahip. He, likewise, ia a consistent supporter of the Union party. Here comes our old friend Jay Oee Sparks, with hat in band, aa candidate for Judge of Probate. He is well known to most our people, is well qualified to fill the office. One special thing in his favor is, that be is gall and wormwood to Copperheads. And here steps forth our excellent friend Robert Frost, for County Commia«i«ner. We doubt not he will give a good account of himself if elected. He, too, is a firm and con*iatent friend of the Adminis tration. There they are, dear people. Tliey ask your support on the 4th of June next. They are all men who can act independent of stale cliquea and unhallowed combina tions. Tliey are the nominees of the UNION PASTY, and if defeated the glo rious cause of our country, so tar as Thurston county ia concerned, is irre deemably vanquished. BP The Black-Guard editor of the P. Tribune sayt: " Wooly-headed O Murphy prates al most incessantly about •bolters,' ' dif or ganizers,' * radicals,' • tecesh traitors,' (alluding to the people who crushed the rebellion), and yet he has not supported the Union ticket of this county on any one tingle occasion for the past four years, but bolted a portion of it every cunvass, and did hi* , utmost to defeat individual candidates, because they did not rait hib disordered fauey." This paper has invariably supported the Unioo nominations to the very best of its ability, and has never bolted a tingle nomi nation. " Wooly-headed O Murphy " has voted the straight Union ticket ever since the party baa been in existence, with the single exception of the candidate for audi tor two yean ago. Instead of acknowledging the " corn." we are " beat but we can't stand it," we will either rale or ruin." Under this statement of affairs many were led to sign the call for a mass meeting—men who do not affiliate witn or support Radical fanatics. When [the facts are made known they will not be slow in giving the cold shoulder to all such diseixanising, ruining schemes, wQI support tbe regular nominees of the Con servative Union Convention,; and conaign the radical fanatics to a place darker than the cause they advocate. Hence we are not sur prised that the tri-weekly Black-Guard should publish an elaborate " exposition " of the aims and objects of tbe Union party | it is so anxious to defeat, wrought from , the Over-heated braiu of its editor-in-chief i from Tulallip. It is unnecessary for na j to state that the assumptions contained in i the article headed " The Schemers— Their I Object,'' etc., is false, and black as the race the Bads hug to their breasts. But it does let a ray of light into the schemes of tbe Pickwick Club, some members of which lack . discretion, and somstim«s give an inkling of the objects of tbschief pipe layers. Neph ssid a few weaks ago, "" as we are crediubly informed," that It was absolutely nect asary fcr the clique to rally in force and carry the County Con vention for themselves so that a, clique candidate for Congress could be selected next year.
