Convention,
ing Eastern elections will \« a terri
ble calamity to the Nation, nioro«li>-
Mtrous in its results than any ortleal
through which it has yet passed.
The extent of this morbid hatred can
probably best be judged from the
prevailing tone ol the leading Radi
cal journals, and from these wo can
glean but little hope. The cry is for
war—war to the knife, no concession,
no compromise—nothing but a com
pliance withßadicaldemands in their
freest and fullest scope. Under these
circumstances, no election that has
ever been held is fraught with the
momentous consequences of the
pending canvas 3in the Eastern
States. It may involve us in anoth
er and more terrible war than that
just closed. Reason is lost upon
fanatics. "Strife is their natural
element, and their vision dwells upon
blood." Will they hesitate to avail
themselves of any alternative as
a short cut to Radical glory? We
Would be compelled to ignore their
whole nature to believe that they
would not. If impeachment of Pres
ident Johnson is all they fancy is
needed to accomplish this sublime
result, will a Radical Congress long
hesitate, with a two-thirds majority
of representatives from twenty-six
States to back their decree ? It may
be unconstitutional, but what care
they ? It is an instrument to be set
aside when it stands in their way.
If this crowning act of infamy is at
tempted, to save a corrupt party at
the cost of the lite of the Govern
ment, is not another appeal to arms
inevitable, if we would sustain the
principles which have already cost
bo dear a price ? When we cousider
the determined hostile course of the
late Congress, the steadfast endeavor
manifested to widen the breach be
tween Congress and the President,
to engender and keep alive sectional
ill-feeling, and the character of the
convention called by these malcon
tents, how can wo avoid the conclu
sion that tho country is again drift
ing among the breakers ?

Prof. Herman, the wizardand

Ilall, on Monday evening last. His
performances arc far better than the
average skill displayed by legerde
main performers. The lecture 011
" Women's Rights" was well re

seems to have given satisfaction.
Mr. 11. gave a performance at Turn

THANKS.— Messrs. White & Bauer,

many occasions resembles a drunken

is never so much out of place as in
an assembly clothed with the judicial
severity of law-makers.

TO FAMILIES
LIVING IN THE COUNTRY
DB. IMYNTON'S MEDiCINE CHEST
IS put up in San Francisco expressly for Uio
use of fiimilicti, uuil consists of a chest of
uioderute dimensions, neat in its appearance,
containing those household articles, simple
remedies, that families always feel like keep
ing on hitnd for immediate and common use,
and a book of brief instructions, describing
their use.
The object in preparing this chest was not
to make doctors, but for the simple purpose
of nursing; hence a majority of the remedies
arc sucb us are familiar to nearly all who are
advanced in life, and the book is simply a re
presentation of those plain truths relating to
the department of the nurse already set iortli
in more extensive works. It was the object,
not io say many things, but to say few things
—lO simplify, and make idai" for common
use. And in selecting the eonteuts of the
chest, the object was not lo set forth something
new and wonderful, but those old, and of ac
knowledged worth.
lu view of the above facts, physiciaus have
everywhere encouraged the circulation oftbis
chest in untnistakeable terms. They recog
nize the fact that families do not, will not,
need not en il on them on the occasion of every
slight cernngei.icnt or infirmity. They do not
and can not deny ihe fact that such obligations
•of home can rest upon heads of families.
The book gives a description of ucai-ly evenr
medicine iu tlie collection, tlicir use, and
thi ir competent parts, so that every person
nifty know what tie is receiving into bis stom
ach or applying to his person. This openness
nnd frankness is regarded by tho best practi
tioners, and all considerate persons as justice,
more than policy. The unfwrsal conviction of
the more thoughtful is, that that wbirh re
lates to our health nnd physical well-being in
this life should, above all things, be known,
and not kept in the darkness of secrecy.
In introducing the chest in the country, we
always first suluiit it to the criticism of prac
ticing physicians, nnd feeling tho importance
nnd seeing the necessity in this sparcoly settled
country of homo nursing, and seeing tbe adap
tability of this chest, physicians in San Fran
cisco, Sacramento, Stockton. Knight's Land
ing, Cachville, Marysvillc, Colusa, Oroville,
Lincoln, Folsom, nnd Auburn, have given it
their hearty sanction. Seeingthe necessity ou
this coast of people relying npon themselves in
sucli matters, physicians in this State have re
marked:—"lf I could choose but ouefor a fa
mily I wonld every time choose the nurse In
stead of the physician." "If families would
get a collection of simple remedies, with plain
