As you ramble among the trees, you arc ever and anon saluted by an in scription upon the fruit, done as it were by the hand of nature herself. On some you will fiud the names of favorite political can didates. Here you meet with the fauiilar names of Mary, or Alice, or a date (1808) —iu brief, everything that may suggest iNrlf to your taste or fancy; and all done in the skin of the fruit, without abrasion «>r auy foreign impression. The discovery was made by the lion. Arthur W. Austin, of West Roxbury, in 1 Sol—2. lie ob served, during the former year, that ap ples did not redden in that part of the fruit where a leaf happened to lie opon it. In 1852 he cutout letters l'roui newspa pers, an<L when tha apples were yet green, lie pasted them upon them with paste such ad the apothecaries use, made of gum tragacanth. The apples would redden in nil parte not covered by the pasted letters. When the fruit had reddened to perfection the letters were removed, and they would appear permanently outlined in green. Sj, again, when lie pasted on the apple n paper in which letters weje cut out, the parts covered by the paper would be green aud the letters would appear distinctly turned in red. the green ground surround ing them. The experiment is a very pret ty one, and produces a lmppy« effect. Let our fruit growers try it. How much bet ter the relish of apple or pear if the name of the favorite should thus appear on it, as if written by the hand of nature. What a superior price such fruit, so inscribed, would command in market, and what a pretty present it would bo to any lady at a feast." HKAT.TW RECIPE. —When persons are feverish anil thirsty beyond what is natu ral, indicated iii some eases by a metallic taste in the mouth, especially after drink ing water, or by a whitish appearance of the greater part of the tongue, one of the best " coolers," internal or external, to take a lemon, cut off the top, sprinkle ever it some fine loaf sugar, work it downward into the lemon with a spoon, and then suek it slowly, squeezing the lemon and adding more sugar as the acidity increases from being brought up from a lower point. In valids with feverishness may take two or three lemons a day in this manner, with the most marked benefit manifested, by a sense of coolness, comfort, and invigora tion. A lemon or two taken thus at tea time, as un entire substitute for the ordi nary "supper" of summer, would give many a man comfortable night's sleep, and an awaking of rest and invigoratiou with an appetite for breakfast, to which theyarc strangers who will have their cup of tea or supper "relish" and "coke,'.' and berries or peaches and cream.— HalFt Journal of IlealfA. - »!»■ AN EASY MKTHOIITO IIAVE IIEATIIY FHUIT TREES. —An experienced fruit grower, who possesses a beautiful orchard near the Niagara river, Western Now York, has used ono simple method with great success. lie takes lye from slacked ashes, mixes a little grease with it, heats it quite warm, and then with a syringe throws it into all parts of the trees, branches and trunk. It will effectually kill all caterpil lars, all kinds of worms that are cither in festing the trees in nests or running over the bark. Trees treated in this manner were exceedingly healthy, beautiful and vigorous-ill appearance, possessed a smooth, glossy bark, and bore the best apples of the country. The remedy is easy and cheap. CURE FOE IN-GROWING NAILS. —It is stated that cauterization by hot tallow is nn immediate cure for in-growing nails. J'ut a small piece of tallow in a spoon, and heat it over ji lamp until it becomes very hot. and drop two or three drops between the nail and the granulations. The effect is almost magical. Pain and tenderness arc at once relieved, and in a few days the granulations all go, leaving the diseased part* dry. so as to admit of ltoiug pared away without any inconvenience. The op eration causes but little pain if the tallow i- properly heated. • €AYKXN« VINEGAR. —Haifa* ounce of Cayenne pepper, half a pint of vinegar. Put the vinegar ii.to a bottle with the above proportion of Cayenne, and let it steep for a month ; then strain off and bottle for use.
