Tilli I}' 1 }' was getting up his team, the grey aiul bay, to go out to the Depot last Wednesday, the horses thought of something they wanted to see away up in the south-eastern part of town, and suiting the action to thought, sprang out of the stable, attached to the old stage wagon, at a fearful rate of speed, scattering di bri# here and there from the place of starting to a point in the timber near Varner's Camp. They stopped about about as abruptly as does this item. FIKE AT VANCOUVER. —The old build ing in Vancouver, known as St. Joseph's Hospital, was destroyed by tire last Sunday afternoon, originat ing from a defective flue. The . building was ereoted about 15 years ago, and the loss is therefore com paratively light, as it bad about out lived its usefulness. The loss is placed at 92,500, half of which is in damage to furniture. There was a small insurance on the building. USEFUL AcooMi'LISHMENT.-The teach er of dress-making is closing her en gagements. Her pupils are said to have made great proficiency; but we are not afraid to wager amonth'ssub scription to the DAILY EXPEMMENT that " Auntie" will continue to cut and fit the dresses for every moth er's daughter who has " learned the method." OLYMPIC HOTEL. —This favorite re sort continues to attract a large share of public custom. It is centrally lo cated, the table well supplied, and under the immediate supervision of Mrs. Sparks and her daughter Mil lie. The Olympic is a comfortable home for the wayfarer. • AN INDICATION. —The prairie schoon ers that so frequently visit our city from the Chehalis country, plainly indicate what might be expected in the line of freight business, if we had railroad communication with that rich agricultural section of our Ter ritory. fy If a contemorary with itching ears does not relish our witticisms he need not read them. We are told in Kane's Elem mts of Criticism that the true essence of wit has nev er yet been defined, and hence our neighbor dose not know what he is talking about. Boynton recently from the Skokomish Reservation, Mason county, reports everything in a prosperous condition in the In dian country. Mr. Boynton, with his family, has a leave of absence for a few weeks, which he wisely devotes to rest and recreation. His colleague, Mr. Beatty, prefers to wait a little longer, and, aa the Christian war song has it, " Bear the toil, endure the pain," until the day of deliver ance whicV, we believe, is about the first of July next. Or The people of Portland are excited over their water-rates, al though they are no higher than our own; and they receive a full supply, while our's has been the past few weeks shut off a third of the time. There is no deduction for short sup ply, in the bills presented, and they are promptly paid, but such clemen cy would not be extended to the milkman, or the vender of wood or coal. If he is short in ueasure or weight, he is " docked." TiiEOlympia District School will begin its fall term on Monday, the 23d inst. The teacher has not yet been selected, but the directors say they have a good supply of material to select from, the applications being unusually mumerous. Three depart ments will be opened—primary, in termediate and academic —and/the school will continue, if possible with out intermission, nine months. It is proposed to levy a special tax to maintain it in part. DB. Clark will lecture next Sunday upon " The Evil and Good of Spirit ualism," an answer to apponents and skeptics, and again upon " Spiritual Science."
