TROY Dye, the man who planned the murder cf Tullis, near Sacramen to, has become a raving maniac. THE people of Oregon City alone, have subscribed $25,000 in aid of the Springfield and Oregon City railroad. THE steamer Dakota arrived at the estside wharf at 9 o'clock Satur day morning. She left Sunday morning at 3 o'clock. VEGETABLE raisers in this vicinity aro vigorously at work preparing their lands for early, and we hope, abundant crops. APRIL has, BO far, nearly kept pace with March in its vaiiety of wcathei, having successively brought us rain, snow, hail, frost aud sleet, with a tolerable amount of sunshine. THE Oregon Steam Navigation Company have in contemplation the shortening of the time now re quired to make the trip between Portland and Walla-walla. It is thought that the time can be re duced twenty-four hours. THE upper bridge at Tumwater has been undergoing a thorough overhauling and repairing, und is now in a safe condition for the heaviest loads. Mr. Hugh Cornell had charge of the work, and he has aoquitted himself in a most commend able manner. THE Portland papers are begin ning to admit that among passen gers who come to Astoria, many " take the road to Puget Sound." So they do not all settle in Oregon, full well, that we have, in many respects, superior inducements to offer them. THE Garlinville Democrat of March 15th, contains the official report rendered by the Board of Supervis ors in reference to the expenses in curred by Daniel Delany in coming to this place to arrest the supposed G. H. Holliday. The whole thing foots up just $975, and the officials of Macaupin county are not disposed to pay it without further explanation from Mr. Delany. THE Union Academy Club beat the Olympia boys at the match game of bap® ball, on the Public Square, this morning, by a score of 15 to 14. On the 9th inning a tie of 13 to 13, showing that the clubs were quite evenly matched. The next inning, to deoide the game, resulted in a triumph of the East Olympians, but by BO small a score that numer ous contests will doubtless result for I the championship. PORTLAND people are afflicted with a good deal of Bickness. CHERUY-trees are putting on their cheerful garments of white. Mn. M. Z. Goodell, of Montesano is in town, on a business visit. OPEN temperance meetings are still largely attended in Portland. FOR days together, our wharves have been thronged by Chineßo fish* ermen. THE birds are improvident. They are seriously disturbing the cheiry blossoms. ■ WE had made up our mind to say " more hew goods," but that does not express it. THE last man arrested on suspicion of having murdered Mrs. Hager is Louis Graichen. MEATS and brendstuffs are still go ing up in price throughout England. Let our farmers look ready for mar kets. VIOLET and blue are the favorite shades; in July and August, the fa vorite shade will doubtless be the shade of a tree. THE man who cannot afford to buy his wife a new calico dress every month, at present prices, deserves a curtain lecture every night. THE first number of a new paper, to be called the " North Pacific Rural Prens," will be issued at Portland on the sth inst., under the editorial con trol of W. W. Baker. THE murderers' carnival is not yet ended. A family of four persons was recently cut to pieces by an axe in the hands of some unknown per son near San Jose, California. THERE is to be a meeting of the Pilot Commissioners of the Colum bia river and bar at Kalama, on the 15th of April, for the transaction of important business. Ma. Losh Harker returned, last night, from a brief visit to the At lantic States, well satisfied to make this blooming, free-and-easy country, his future home. MR. E. N. Ouimette has returned from a flying visit to Portland and reports business in that city usually brisk in the wholesalo line, but very dull in the retail trade. THE " White Stocking Croquet Club" has been organized by the lit erary young ladies of Portland. We thought white stockings were not so much worn now-a-days. THE most manifest change in the weather is a lowering of the temper ature to the extent that calls into agreeable requisition the use of*over coats and crackling fires. THE Sunday Schools of Seattle are talking of uniting for a grand May day excursion. It is high time for our Sunday Schools to be up and doing in this pleasant work. According to late Portland papers, there is to be a large immigration, during the Summer, to Oregon " and Washington Territory." It used to be all Oregon and no Wash ington. QUITE an exciting scene transpired at the Methodist church, last even ing, a few minutes before the com mencement of service. One of tho large' chandeliers, containing six burners, together with their globes and chimneys, fell with a crash t® the floor. The ignited oil spread in all directions, and but for the timely efforts 01 the few who w<?re in the church at the time, a general con flagration would have ensued. OLYMPIA, WASHINGTON TERRITORY. TRICHINA has again appeared in pork, and it is hoped by some mod ern philanthropists that this will settle the Chinese question in an unexpected manner. John's partial ity for pork is well known, and this would be a " means" with which nobody could find fault. THAT was rather hard on calico, when a lady lriend, and one of our leaders of fashion, declared that if rival merchants continued to in crease the number yards of that article for a dollar, a calico dress would soon get to be something not to be proud of, especially, when a lady could say that her dress cost only four bits. THERE is a prospect that Indian Territory, heretofore sacred to the tread of the southwestern aborigin als, will be thrown open to indis criminate settlement. It is thought that a vigorous effort will be made to procure the passage of a bill, during the present session of Con gress, to legalize the taking of land claims by emigrants. THE depression in commerce and agriculture is now so serious a thing in England, that prominent mem bers of Parliament are taking the matter in hand. Let them call their troops home from Afghaniston and the Zulu country, mind their legiti mate home offaip, and they will have no occasion to deplore the hard times that now threaten them. A GOOD deal is being written and said about the harbor of refuge about to be established on this coast. Port Orford, Cape Foul weather, the mouth of the Columbia and Cape Flatteiy are all represented by their admirers as desirable points. For location and the amount of money required to be expended, Port Or , ford appears to have the advantage. EAST Portland thieves are in the habit of stealing the doors, windows and even chimneys from unoccupied houses. When Oregon produces a man who can deliberately steal a populous county including the court house, from the State of Illinois, and bring the whole to this coast, we will acknowledge her as a peer of the realm. Stealing chimneys is not to be compared with what we can do over here. ME. W. H. Dodge, of Portland, representing the extensive* fkursery of H. W. Prettyman, recently ship ped to Sboalwater Bay, six thousand of the celebrated Silver Prune set tings, the fruit of which excels the ordinary kinds in every respect. We have examined, side by side, dried specimens of the Silver Prune and common varieties, and unhesitating ly pronounce the former far ior to the latter. This is a good item to read in connection with our leader of thie issue. WILD strawberries are in blossom on the prairies. THE people of Seattle are having new asparagus on their tables. THE moon is near her full, and yet lanterns are very useful at night. A CITIZEN from Lewis county in forms us that the liquor-selling ele ment at Chehalis station is not so froward as it was. Long-continued litigation has not only rebuked but seriously crippled it. THE Daily Bee designates Tum water as being located in " Mason county," W. T., while the Daily Standard corrects the mistake by placing that little city in " county." Where is the school-mas ter? THE present cold weather, is re garded by farmers as rather advan tageous than otherwise, so long as the nights are thick and cloudy. Vegetation is coming on slowly but prosperously, and farmers much prefer having the warm weather come in a similar manner. COFFEE drinkers will regret to hear that a serious disease threatens the welfare of this valuable plant. The disease is known as " phylloxera," and has broken out among the coffee plantations of Brazil. In a little less than two years, nearly half a million plants have been destroyed in the province of Rio Janerio, valued at about $90,000. VINELAND, New Jersey, is a model town in a good many respects. It has about ten thousand inhabitants and employs but one officer in any way connected with the duties of a constable, he supporting himself by his own labor. The publio ex penditure for the poor during the year 1878 was only four dollars. The people, as it is said of them, do not " even drink beer." Let the people of Olympia ponder these things.
