ftaskmntflu J? traitor.-1 (•cucral Sews. Special to the fcvßSiso OLYMI :AV. The Ellcutbttrg- i'lrc, EixtsrsßtTO, July o—As the flames die away and the smoke slowly ascends from the smouldering ruins, the scene is even more gloomly than ! yesterday. There are scxeral theories! as to the origin of the tire. A lew as sert that it was the deliberate work of an incendiary while others just as j eotitiilently lielieve it to have resulted from Fourth of July explosives. Time and further investigation alone can solve the mystery The feeling is that the city nuist, and will, lie built up with buildings of a substantial character. and that the lire will at most only prove a teni]*ir ary interruption. It will, at any rate, accelerate the completion of the many Brick structures already commenced, and has given birth to the projection of many others. The feeling is that the frame buildings still remaining within the tire limits must lie removed and no longer be allowed to menace the security of the city. The lack of a sufficient water supply lieeaine aje parent, even before the fire had de stroyed the building in which it started, and the people were compelled to stand idly by and see their city burn as long as anything remained in the path of the destructive element. Two hundred houses were totally de stroyed and the space burnt over is ten blocks—or alioat fifty acres. The loss, as far as can be ascertained, is $2,000,- ODD, $7.70,000 in buildings and $1,2-70,- 000 in goals. There is not a restaurant, hotel, or boarding house left and about 150 people are destitute. Mayor Abrams called a meeting of the citizens at 3 o'clock and action will lie taken for their relief. While the loss is terrible for the city, her 4,000 citizens maintain cheerfulness and are determined to build more substantially than ever. The city is under patrol and order pre vails. The fire exhausted itself after burning five hours. The city presents a sickening spec tacle this morning. Where long blocks of business houses stood yester day nothing remains but smoking embers. Scores of new brick blocks in process of erection suffered the same fate as the other buildings, and the only four that remained untouched are Moifit's hotel, the Nasi), Howynn and Smith blocks, which were saved by being some distance off from the con flagration. Guards are placed around the | burned district to prevent people from 1 rambling among the crumbling walls I and thieves from pilfering. Little' thieving, however, has been done. HUMAN BONES IN THE BUINB. A crowd collected to-day on the spot formerly occupied by the Bull block, ! and examined the bones of what is j supposed were the remains of one of j the guests of the city. They were so! badly charred that the physicians were 1 unable to determine them. A strong patrol will be kept up to night and extra precautions taken against further incendiarism. THE FIRE LOSERS. JOHNSTOWN, PA., July B.—After con sidering all the evidence in connection with the Johnstown horror, the Coro ner's jury last night Anally rendered the following verdict: "We, the un denigned jury of inquest impanelled to investigate the cause of the death of Ellen Hite on the 31st day of May, after hearing the testimony, do find that Ellen Hite came to her death from drowning, and the drowning was .caused by the breaking of the South Fork (lain; we farther find from the testimony and what we saw on the ground, that there waa not a sufficient waste weir, nor was the dam con structed sufficiently strong or of prop er material to stand the overflow, and hence we find the owners of said dam were culpable in not making it as se cure as it sltould have been done, espe cially in view of the fact that a popu lation of many thousands were in the valley below. We hold the owners are responsible for the fearful loss of life and property resulting from thebreak ng of the dam." Hpedal to the RVEXIXO OLYMPIAN. Kebhedud Manna tam Tree.
