Burning of the Eastern Oregon.
The Oregon Improvement Com
pany's steamer Eastern Oregon was
wholly consumed by tire, with the ex
ception of the iron hull, while on the
grid iron at I'ereival's dock, about 'J
o cluck Tuesday night. .She had ar
rived but a few hours previously for
the express purpose of repairs, and had
just got on the ways when her destruc
tion came. Capt. Green, her com
mander, was superintending a force of
men who were preparing torches and
paint pots for work on the bottom of
the ship. It was necessary to boil the
paint, and in doing this it seems, the
material caught lire, and soon spread
from the galley to the main part of
the ship. So rapid was its progress,
that the crew lrad barely time to
awaken their comrades of the next
watch who had retired. A number es
caped in their night clothes, and some
were so excited that they jumped over
board into the mud. In twenty min
utes from the time the alarm was
given the upper works, with the ex
ception of the fore deck and pilot
house, was a seething mass of llames.
Our lire department were promptly on
duly, l.iit the position of the ship was
such that they could do hut little in
staying the tlames. The vessel was
tilled with water, however, and that
doubtless saved the hull and machinery
from damage by beat.
The Eastern Oregon is a vessel of
about MM) tons burden, and was for
merly the City of I'olatke, in the
Florida trade. She was brought to
this coast in 1887 by the Oregon Pa
cific Railroad Co., to run on the route
hetweiu jsan Francisco and Yatpiiua
hay, hut last year passed into posses
sion of her present owners and was
brought to the .Sound. She cost when
new #2.10,000, and the loss by lire, it is
thought will foot up $180,(XIO.
The saddest incident connected witli
this disaster was only discovered after
the tlames had been extinguished, and
that was that a human being bad
been saeritieed. The body of the
third cook was found in the forecastle
burned in a horrible manner. His
name was Charles Neitcliwurtz, but lie
was better known as " Ducli Charlie."
Further than this nobody seemed able
to give any information.
Much credit is due to our fireman
for their persistent ellbrts all night to
keep the tire from doing damage to
the hull and in confining it to the
least possible limits. Under the cir
cumstances they did exceedingly well,
as in fact they always do when their
services are called into requisition.

One Pure Baking Powder.
Like Telling a Secret.
A story is told and it is a true story that over seventy
per cent of all the baking powders sold contain either alum
or ammonia, and many of these powders contain both. The
ili effects upon the system of food raised by alum or ammo
nia powders are the more dangerous because of their insidious
character. It would be less dangerous for the people were it
fatal at once, for then such food would be avoided, but their
baneful action because imperceptible at first and slow in its
advances, is no less certain.
Lir. Price's Cream Baking Powder is declared by all
authorities as free from alum, ammonia or any other adul
terant. Its purity has never been questioned, and while it
does finer and better work, it costs no more at retail than
®*ny of the adulterated ponders,

Secretary Armstrong, of the State

An Idea.
It onglit to lie true, whether it i 9 or
not, thia story that cotnes from a Milan
lunatic asylum. The director of the es
tablishment in some way had suggested
to hiiu the idea of trying the effect of
various colors on his insane patients.
There was no dog convenient to try it
on first, so he began witli a melancholy
luuatic. The patient was so down and
far gono that he would not eat, and all
the nourishment lie took had to be ad
ministered to him forcibly. The di
rector removed him to a room fnrnished
in a glowing pink color. All around
him wits of rosy hue, not a dark or sad
colored object in sight. In twelve hoars
the melancholy fellow began to cheer np
in the rose room. In twenty-four hoars
ho asked for food of his own accord.
Following out the hint, the director
had rooms furnished especially to snit
thu different craze 9of his patient. If
an insane person was violently raving,
ho was clapped into a blno or green
room, theso two colors being found most
soothing. If he was suffering from
melancholia, there was the room of rosy
hue, which cheered him perceptibly.
Red, however, the color of blood, was
proved to be exciting to the patients.
Here is a hint for people outside of
lunatic asylnms. The major part of
mankind is said to be insane more or
less. Why not try the color cure? If a
woman has settled down into habitual
dumps and blues put her into a rose
room. If, on the other hand, anybody
has become a rabid reformer, with wild
eyes and hair and wilder hobbies, soothe
him off in a blue or green room. Or,
again, if any member of thehnman fam
ily is stolid and stupid as an ox, and no
way has yet been found to punch him up
and make him march on with the race,
givo him a fiery red bedroom.
