I ob stacles which might discourage the ordinary man are to him allurements, looking forward to nobler endeavor. Time seems not to abate his natural force ordim his natural insight re garding Life's struggles and achieve ments. Postmaster Cavanaugh's trip to Washington, 1). The Chamber of Commerce is be ginning to wrestle with the tar nuisance on our block-paved streets, which fries out whenever the sun shines, and incommodes walking as well as destroying carpets no matter how carefully the foot-scraper at the doorway is applied. In the case of Crosby, as adminis trator of the Harkness estate, vs. 11. G. Richardson, the Superior Court has decided that Mr. K. hav ing elected to pui chase the real estate on wjiich his mill is located for the consideration of $5,001t from the estate, he stands in the relation of a vender and not that of lessee. His original lease gave him the option to purchase. This decision relieves him ' from payment of rent from the time of his election. It is unrighteous to grant away the public thoroughfares of a city, especially when it is detrimental to the property and interests of men and women living in the vicinity, whose rights are injuriously affected, as demonstrated by the acts of the City Council and the Olympia Door Co. in the lower part of the city. Such transactions provide fertile soil for the propoganda of the initiative, referendum and the recall. No good can come from wrong doing. Where are we to get off at? During the week Judye Ben Sheeks has been holding court here, hearing matters in which Judge Mitchell was disqualified. Among these was the case of Chas. Lansdalc vs. one Bur gess, C. N. Allen .and wife. Burgess defaulted, while Mr. and Mrs. Allen appeared and contested the com plaint; claimed there was a novation of interests by which they were re leased, also the plaintilf company had failed to file in the Auditor's of fice a certificate as required by tho laws of IMO7. Judge Sheeks, after hearing the arguments of ihe at torneys gave judgment in favor of Lansdale for S3OO and costs. THK /'< rln/ TII ins state that the Kastsiders at a late meeting en deavored to enforce their demand for street-car extension by the threat that they will boycott the company by refusal to patronize the cars and house-lights. If true, this is a poor policy. The old adage says ' Vine gar never catches flies," and the truth of the saying will doubtless be an expressive illustration of unwise men literally cutting otf their own noses to spite their faces. —— TWKNTV Tacomans have been in dicted for "padding" the census.
