Miss Sallie Kagsdule, of Haynes, spent last week with friends and relatives here. Mrs. Scott, of Forrest City, accompanied by her son Peyton, mother of our “one James L. McDaniel and little son Charlie, und Mrs Kate Porkius and little son left Saturday to spend a few weeks in the blue grass regions of Kentucky. Wo are glad to notice that the infant baby of Prof. Geo.L. Jackson is much better, after such a seyere attack of bronchitis. Mi Williams, a polite and hand some hardware man, representing the old and reliable house of Orgill Bros A Co, of Memphis, was here Tuesday and sold Scott & Nelson a nice line of goods. Dr J. A. Williams, of Haynes, w-as up a number of times this week ou professional business. Polities are geting warm here. The white people are for Hamilton and the “negroes” for Wintbrop. Where is Wilson’s votes? We guess all the sorehead Candidates, are going to vote for thcmsolvos. We noticed in last week’s “New Era” whore some backwoods cor respondent gave tho Memphis Avelanche the “infamous lie” in referring to somo wbool. Wo think such shows more “cheek” than brains. Quite a number ot Dotn young, and old people gathered on tho' banks ofL/anguillclast Woduesday j and enjoyed quito a nice time iii| tbe way of a fish try and bruuswick stew. Among the older ladios present we noticed Mrs. 11. Evans and Mrs. Scott, who declared it was the first enjoyment of the: kind they had witnessed since the j war. The Serenadars wish to return thanks for the cordial reception shown them at each and every place they visited Satuiday night Also for the grapes, wine, ico cream, and cake, sod many other nice things. Although some of the boys lost a horse and buggy, | they took it easy and seemed to have had a real good time. Aug 1 ^ Owing to the length of tuat “answer Irons the state candidates.” We havo decided not to publish it. We have pasted it up at the post [office, however, and all who desire may read it. As I feel very calm and my mind is unrufled and am thoroughly in a good humor, I thought it a good time to wrilo a few words in answer to my friend “Billy” who is a good man and well liked by all his neighbors as a citizen and an officer. We claim however, that he is falible just liko the rest ot us, and just as liable to go wrong. Still he is a good fellow and we should bo sorry to see him defeated for justice of the peace. There is principle involved, however, and wo cannot as democrats, go boyond what we think is right and just. We have no harsh words for “Billy” but will just say that if he runs on the independent ticket, be will be handsomely defeated. Old Griggs township is largely demo cratic in politics and will do all in her power to lawfully down all independents. “Public office is a public trust,” and we are going to fill all of them with good democrats. They are the friends to the work ing man. Ciops are good. Health not so good. There was a barbucucat Widner’s Thursday all candidates wore invited but no speaking was per mitted. The democrats met at the school houso and organized a democratic club. Swamper Jack, Two Bottles Cure KhsuinatUm. Uoi'oiiton, Ark , June 4, 'H7. I cheerfully state the following facts in regard to the use <>f your medicine in my family. My little son, 14 years of age, suffered from an acute attack of rheumatism, caused by undue exposure and chilling of the blood. I heard your remedy highly recommended, and pur chased one bottle of Moncrief & liro., Prescott Ark. In about one mouth af ter using this bottle, he became so much better that I bought the second bottle, which is now being used, and my son is nearly well, and I think by removing him to a cooler summer Climate (which 1 will do) and continuing its use, per fect cure will be effected. I consider U II I* a most excellent blood puritier. Ciias. II.Titus, [7-ll-Xt] It It Agt., Uroughton, Ark. PA1AXSTINE TIMES. A meeting of tho citizens of Prairio township was held at the School house in Palestine, on Thursday, tho 9th inst., for the purpose, of organizing a demo cratic club. Dr. D. H. Slayton was called to the chair, and J. Tunstall acted us secretary. Tho Secretary read the following resolutions, viz. 1st. Resolved, That this organiz ation be known as the Prairie Township Democratic Club of St. Francis County and that all legally qualified voters may become members thereof by subscribing to these resolutions. 2nd Resolved, That wo the un dersigned members of said Club do acknowledge and assert our belief in Democratic principles and that it is our duty, as American citizens, to support said principles by every honorable and legal means in our power. 3rd Resolved, That in the for h comiug election we will heartily support tho National and Stale tickets of the regular Democratic conventions. 4th Rosolvcd, That in County affairs wo ask the co-operation of ail thinking mon and our tax paying neighbors to aid us in saving tho county from tho curse of incompetent or selfish office seoKers. After each motion hail been adopted separately, and all col lectively, there were forty five gentlemen came forward and affixed their signatures to tho document. On motion the chairman then appointed the followinggontlonsen to servo asab executive committee: J. L. Harvey—H. J. Goram—Wm. Young—R. R. Woods—John Slutts —H. A. Martin—W. M. Partridge —John lliggens—T. R. Burnett. Said Committee will meet at Palestine every Monday evening. Tho Club then adjourned to meet at Palestine evening at four o’clock. J. Tunstall, Secty. MAXI FOLD KNOWLEDGE. John Calvin, the first title in Vol. VII. of Alden's Manifold Cyclopedia, occupies seven pages, and Cevennes, the last title, the name of the chief mountain range iu the South of France, is given nearly one page. Between these there are over 600 pages, includ ing considerably over 100 illustrations, devoted Ij topics in every department of human knowledge, for instance: Calw, a manufacturing town in Wurtemberg, 11 lines s|>aee; Calypso, in Grecian legend, 6 lines; Calyx (iu botany), 30 lines; Cam (a river), « lines; Camaidolites (a religious order), 10 bu s; Cambridge University,5 1.2 pages; Cainbvses (King of tbe Meiles; half page; Camel (quadruped, 3 pages; Camera (in optics), 3 pages; Canada, 8 pages; Canal, 3 pages; Caucer, 4 pages; Carbonifereous System (in geology), 3 pages; Cards (playing), 4 pages. Car pentry (10 illustrations), 5 pages; Catalectic (in jioetry), 2 lilies, and so on. These few specimens indicate the won dt.ful variety and comprehensiveness of the knowledge embraced within the scope of the work. It is an ordinary Cyclopedia of Universal Knowledge, and an Unabridged Dictionary of language in oue, the editorial work being in skillful bauds, the mechanical work, paper, printing and binding, all that one can reasonably wish, the form convenient lieyoud all precedent in works of reference, and the cost so trivial as to astouish even those who have been familiar with the remarkable i accomplishments of Alden's “•Literary Revolution.” It is probably better than any other Cyehqiediaor Dictionary adapted to popular use. The publisher sends specimen pages free to anv applicant or specimen volumes, which may be returned, bound iu cloth for 50 cents; or half Morocco 85 cents, postage 10 cents. John B. Akoen.
