THOSE AWFUL RESULTS. T Flections were held Tuesday in i*!:e states of Massachusetts, New York. New Jersey, Pennsylvania, •Maryland, Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, Missouri, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota and Colorado, and the • city of Chicago. In all of these states •except Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri arid Colorado, state officers were elected, and with the exception of Kentucky i and Virginia all have given large ve- j t publican majorities. New York gives republican tnajori 'ticr ranging from 45,590 to 15*5,000. Ohio has given Bill McKinley, the father of the McKinley bili, about 85, *000 majority over Larry Neal. The gallant Boise, of Iowa, is defeated 'by a majority of about 35,000 republi cs u votes. Massachusetts, elects a republican governor, the first time in three years, ►by 32,000 majority. New Jersey gave republican’mniofi -ties but no reliable estimate can bs given. Virginia gave tho democrats about 5o,000 majority. Kentucky also remains faithful to the (j.0.15 in its minor elections. Pennsylvania has rather increased! •her republican vote and rolled up a! majority for that party of about HO,-! 000. South Dakota is “small potatoes,” but she averages up w ith her 'sister states, and gives the republican ticket • f t 0 majority. County elections returns in Colorado ‘show republican gains. The news from Kansas and Nebraska i and Utah territory is meagre, and un- j •reliable. But the republicans claim •large increase, Maryland gives a20,0C0 majority for ' democracy. Chicago elected a republican for act[ in r;. ayor to succeed Hon. Carter Har rison. lately assassinated. J'droit elected an entire republican • municipal ticket Oiii roosters are so very sick that it is dangerous to bring them out. We know that the majority’ of those who ale loyal to this country and pay their pro portion of its expenses, will be right. Let the peoplo rule. _ The suggestion of several newspa pers that tlte people instruct for United j States -senator in their primary elec-1 tion or nominating conventions next year, is a go»d one. All aspirants, so far as we know, favor such instruction. I and it is right that the people should Instruct for every office frcm president to constable. It is w ith sincere regret- that we note tbe ill health of Mr. L. A. Palmer, ol the Helena Morning Advertiser, and its consequent suspension. The Adver tiser was a paper alike in sentiments with Tuk Times, and one in touch with the people. With no desire to praise ourself, by comparison, we truthfully say that we can ill afford to Jose even one such paper. We hope the Morning Advertiser will be re sumed at an early day. A veitv valuable communication from our regular correspondent,"G.T.” entitled “What Children Should-Read and Why,” appears in to-day's issue. Pc rents should ponder over its perti nent suggestions. Such hooks a3 ”G. IV mentions us unfit for a moral eye may, possibly, be found in Forrest City. Perhaps there is not a bookstore in the land but which keeps a select stock ot trash. It is necessary, because of the! demand. The bookseller cannot be | found fault with. He. is doing a legiti mate business. We are glad to be able to state that the demand in Forrest Gif is largely for the higher class ol' literature. Suxday evening there boarded the i i eastbound Little Rock and Memphis | tram, near Heath, several Memphis business men, who had spent the Sab bath in a deck shooting match. They had bagged seventy-two ducks, besides having lost twenty-five or thirty. There is a law against hunting on Sunday and also prohibiting hunters from other States hunting and snipping game nut of tins State. The Times would have no complaint to make against legiti-! mate hunting on hunrting days, but we j fee! it to be our duty to protest against this utter disregard ol our tews by Memphis “sports,” and we hope the grand jury will investigate the matter and indict every “n filer’s bog” of them. While ir Memphis Monday night, the editors of The Times had the pleas ure of healing the Ibv. Sam Jones preach one of his chi meter iatic ser in ay. The Times is on record re garding Lev. Jones and it has nothing to take back after having heard him. We can siy however, that ':e utters many great truths. Aside from de- ; tiling<rodv house with slang profanity ; and vulgarity, the Rev. Sau Jones; might be justly rated a ••tolerably 1 fair'’ preacher. We have always been I taught u» hold in reverence any and) all things of, or pertaining -to God, ami the church and pulpit are of these. We therefore cannot endorse the loath some vulgarity and in lecencies which j we heard fail from the lipt of Litis at tract!, e man. 14 e uses snfeh language as “you old she-devil cats” when he wishes to specially impress bis female heard.;.
