C.'s make themselves solid with their constituency by a lavish distribu tion of seeds. Judge R. T. Scott's nomination for postmaster for Forrest City lias been confirmed and the Judge will succeed the present incumbent some time this month. The retiring postmistress. Mrs. D. M. Wilson, has made a good officer, her assistants having been always cour teous, accommodating, and guarding the people’s interest. Preparations for the grand Got ten States and international Exposi tion. at Atlanta, Ga.. are progressing in a roost satisfactory manner. A large number of the recent attractions of the Columbian Exposition will be re produced at the Atlanta Exposition, and many new features have been se cured which will make it of lively in terest to all visitors. It will open Sep tember P and clo-e Deeeml»er 8i. 1895. The soil of St. Francis county is better fur general purposes than any county *il the State. We have all varieties of land—bottom land, table land, moun tain land—adapted to the production of anything that grows in the ground. The timber is inexhaustible and sea sons propitious. 'The health is second to none, school and churches abound; society the best in the world. Fiices of lend to suit everybody. These are the advantages St.;Franeis offers to all. The Militia bill was slaughtered by a few moss-backs who thought $40,000 per annum was extravagance. One “Gray” said the State did'nt need any Militia, and mil such brilliant ideas as tips was entered against the bill. Ar kansas has the least appropriation of any State in the United States for the maintainenee of its Militia. Its troops are the most poorly equipped, and un less something is done, by the powers that be, to encourage them, we feel safe in asserting that the Arkansas Slate Guard will soon become an or ganization of the past. Almost daily the mails bring us cir culars. newspapers and letters, from eminent cotton men, urging a de crease in the cotton acreage, and pre dicting that unless the crop is cut down materially (and in this manner) the ci;op of 1895 will sell at 3j to 4 cents on plantations. Our farmers should fig ure carefully on futures, and give the question of profit their undivided at trition before seed time, lest the har vest leave them further in debt and without the means of living. The farmer of all others should live well apd prosper, but like others he must bijing into his business common sense, and profit by experience. It availeth inflight to raise 4 cent cotton with which to pay for 10 cent supplies. Jury List. GRAND J UR V. Sul Lewis. J F. Eidridpe, vinpil Owen. W A Mo Bee Van Granherry, col, N I! Tipton’s Druj; >»«{£, Re^ujfir size SOc. aiid ji.«03 la. , • • - The Craighead County Sun. usually guileless and discreet,up with the times, and a champion of the people's rights, has l>een duped by the enemies of the St. Francis Ia*vee district into publish in the following unprincipled insinua 1 tion that there is somethingdark about the expenditures of the board, which will not bear the light of investigation: “We have it from good authority that the board of directors of the St. Fran cis l^evee District reins** to open their books to inspection as to the disposi tion ot funds that have come into their hands. If it is true, it speaks very badly for the board and is calculated to involve them in more ways than one. It the report is not correct we will gladly give them space in the Sun to correct the error.” The Sun has been imposed upon, and all sensible persons may readily discern that this slur i; intended to prejudice the minds of the people, and more es pecially the unsophisticated represen tative in the Arkansas • legislature. Every man acquainted with the high character and standing of the members of the board, will at once rec ognize in.this, a slander, intended to benefit the mighty land syndicates and non-resident landowners, who are just now bending every means known to the crafty, to defeat the objects and aims of the Levee board, and thus crippling them, create some plausible excuse for not paying their taxes. Capt. James Eusseil, of this city, than whom a more enterprising, honorable. I conscientious and disinterested citizen 1 does not reside in the district, is treas ' urer of the Levee Board, and upon pre senting the above clipping to him. and asking as to its credibility, lie prompt ly denounced it as “another of then j schemes to cripple the Levee board,” meaning the non-resident land owners who have’nt paid and are endeavoring . to avoid payment of the levee lax. and further stated that there is no founda tion for the statement, and that his 1 looks aie subject to all legitimate in tigation. Furthermore, an exhaustive financial statement has lieen made by these officers to the legislatuie, and they have aided fin every way passible all persons seeking such information.
