The Iron Mountain railroad lias sig nified its intention to grade llie ugly ditches between their tracks on West Front street If they would complete the job by tilling the frog pond by the fed gin. they would receive the praise of the whole community. .Over two hundred people from this city went to Brinkley on the 4th. and nearly all the latlauce of t he population went to tlie bariiecue at Sugar llill and 1 jifc-nics and fish-frys elsewhere. For | awhile it was thought that Dr. .Stone, Marshal Wolff and ye local were tire | only ones left. The band boys received their hand some new uniform* Tuesday, and witli a few minor exceptions are up to their expectations. They left for Brinkley Wednesday night in high spirits. Plans for an inexpensive band stand have been submitted to the authorities with re quest that it be erected in the hotel park; ahd vve may soon expect a weekly open air concert. The boys are pro gressing very nicely, and handle a high grade of music very creditably. John A. 'Packet ami E. Milam, of Jericho, were in town Tuesday inves tigating the potato market. They have about 50 bushels to dispose of, and the samples exhibited by them in dicate that they know how to grow them to perfection. Something of a curiosity was sent ns by Rayburn ’Pack et. which they delivered. It is a tuber of large size with eight smaller tubers perfectly formed and growing from its sides. It was the only potato in the hill. A printing oflice is usually consider ed a rather tough place, and the news paper worker a mighty had man. Sta tistics. however, do not hear out that idea. Of 3,890 convicts in the state penitentiary of Texas there is not a printer or a newspaper man, while there are ministers, doctors. hankers, barbers, photographers, barkeepers, cooks and members of all other pro fessions and callings. The printer gels a bad name because the nature of his busines teaches him to detest shams and he scorns to play the bypocrit. —Eureka Messenger. But for the prompt application of remedies bv a colored doctor, the young 4 year-old daughter of Jas Beard, near Palestine, would have met an awful fate. The child was in the field with its father and in its wanderings stum bled over a rattlesnake. The snake struck at the child, and inserted its fangs in her forefinger. The little one ran screaming with the snake dangling on her hand. The father ran to the house with the child quickly, and bv the application of a live chicken cut in two, the poison was extracted from the wound, and no serious results are anticipated. The barbecue at Sugar Hill, about eig.it miles south of town, w as well at tended yesterday, many people going from this city. The committee of ar rangement evidently knew' their busi ness. for the crowd was lavish in their praise of the good time they enjoyed. Barbecued meats, bread, chicken and pie abounded, and dancing and games tilled the cup of happiness to the brim. “The strangers w ithin their gates” had the best in the land. A friendly bout caused by the inclement weather, or beer, created a little unpleasantness, hut was soon checked, and everything ended joyously. A warrant was sworn out in Squire Nelson’s court Monday for the arrest of Win. Marmaduke. on a charge of rape on the person of Louisa Brown, a colored girl about twelve years of age. The girl’s father. Jonas Brown, charged him with the crime, whereupon Marmaduke assaulted him with an ax, slightly cutting him on the shoulder, hence an additional warrant, on the charge of assault with intent to kill. Marmaduke immediately took to the woods. All persons concerned are colored. This, if true, is the second case of its kind during the year. An example will probably be made of the j third. Professor It. C. Hall returned this morning from Forrest City, where he conducted the normal He reports rood work with an enrollment of thirty seven. and an average attendance of! thirty-three. The teachers showed! marked attention from beginning to finish. He recommends that the act] appropriating $10,000 for this purpose should be amended, making attendance compulsory. Professor Hal! will leave within a few weeks for his old home at Suffolk. Va., and will spend the next two years at the University of Virginiastudving medicine. Mr. Hall has many friends here who will re gret his going away.—Little Hook Dem ocrat. There is more Catarrh in this section of the country than all other diseases put together, and until the last few years was supposed to be incurable. For a great many years doctors pro nounced it a local disease, and prescrib ed local remedies, and by constantly failing to cure with local treatment, pronounced it incurable. Science lias proven catarrh to be a constitutional disease and therefore requires constitu tional treatment. Hall's Catarrh Cure, manufactured by F. J. Cheney & Co.. Toledo. Ohio, is the only constitutional cure on the market. It is taken inter nally in doses from 10 drops to a tea spoonful. It acts directly on the blood and mucous surfaces of the system.
