A Kiel man Fusseil’s motion to close

The facts connected with the matter

c.tiheus, provided a very efficient sys

about the same amount.
The council thinks that the receipts

1'ltEQ/'EyT KILLIXdS.
The frequency with which hillings
are occurring in this county evidences
a deplorable condition of sentiment.
The press of the South, and of Arkan
sas especially, have labored hard to dis
j pel tlie idea obtaining in the Xprth
that human life was held at little value
in the South.
A compilation of the killings in this
county for the past, year would go a
long ways toward sustaining the char
ges made against Arkansas, and all of
the Earnest efforts of tlie Arkansas
press would fail to convince the on
looker that the conditions have been
abnormal. Further, when the citizens
| of a community allow crimes to go nu
I punished—thus encouraging a state of
! lawlessness and anarchy—few papers
■ have the courage and disposition to
| maintain that such a community is
| law-abiding and peaceful, when ap
pearances point to tlie contrary. We
have strenuously insisted that human
life is held as sacred in the Smith as
jelsewlteie, but if killings continue at
• the present rate, we shall he unable t"
| conscientiously make such a claim.
j n e <io n<\ oeheve taut a man wonlu
I commit this horrible crime of taking
human life were lie sure that Swift and
speedy punishment would 1 a inflicted
upon him. Much hinders the rule of
justice. Unscrupulous lawyers, who
are not circumscribed by the attributes
of honesty and integrity .ignorant,iiiile
i rate and criminal juries: technicalities
in tlie law, and the apathetic condition
of the people. These are obstacles that
should lie removed, and removed .it
once.
It is useless to talk of the damage re
sulting to a community that has a
reputation lor crime and lawlessness.
Nobody is ignorant of such injury.
Killing should he condemned most
; strongly by our citizens, the law should
be enforced rigidly, efforts should be
made to secure more intelligent, tear
less and honest jurors, and the lowly
tricks of shyster lawyers should be
frowned down and discouraged in every
jHissible way.
Killings have occurred in this county
which all comments counted diaboli
cal, vet the guilty were justilied by ju
ries who sympathized with the murder
j or and his family. Such disposition of
I these cases encourages murder, and the
time lias cotUe when, if public senti
ment against it is not aroused, murder
and crime of all kinds may be expected
j to run riot.
A healthy public sentiment against
crime does much to avert it. An or
ganized determination to punish mur
derers and other criminals will greatly
i lessen the list of victims.

, It is often difficult to convince peo
ple their blood is impure, until dread
ful carbuncles, abscesses, boils, scrof
ula or salt rhetihi, are painful proof of
the fact. It is wisdom now, or when
ever there is any indication of
blood, to take Hood’s Sarsaparilla, and
prevent suwh eruptions and suffering;.
“I had p dreadful carbuncle al>scess,
red, fiery, fierce and sore. The doctor at
tended roe over seven weeks. When the
abscess broke, the pains were terrible, and
I thought I should not live through it. I
heard nr.d read so much about Hood's
Sarsaparilla, thRt I decided to take it, and
my husband, who was suffering with
boils, took it aiso. It soon purified our
built me up and restored my .health so
that, although the doctor said I v.ould
not be able to work hard, I have since
done the work tor 20 people. Hood’s bar

and we regard it n wonderful medicine.”
