The woman had come from Alabama seeking her brother who, she had heard. >vas living in or near Palestine. She had spent all the money she possessed, had failed to find her brother, and was in destitute circumstances, and almost crazed with the uncertainty of her future. The at tention of Judge Cowan was called to the case, as it w as thought she could be Sent to the poor house. But upon investigation it was plain that under the law she could not be declared a pauper, so the Judge and Squire ltaiford set about to put tier in the way of earning a living. In the meantime she had concluded to return to Alabama, though she declared she could make only 30 cents per diem by the hardest kind pf labor in that section. She w as assured that it would be hotter to wait awhile, and a place was found for her, where she could be comfortable and earn a living. She had scarcely dried her eyes, which were filled w ith tears of joy and •thankfulness, .when the train upon which she had intended to ret inn to Alabama arrived, and it brought Ab ner Davidson, of Monroe county. He is the brother, and it was a happy meeting. He thanked those who had been so kind to his sister, and inform ea mem that lie was able to give her and the children a good home and take care of them. They left on the next train and all were happy. In epeaking of the matter. Judge Cowan remarked- -It did my heart good to see the relief w hieh w as shown in the poor woman’s countenance.” And this is true of every heart which in charity relieves the distresses of mankind.
