Tnr. Times is much encouraged by a letter from a gentleman in a • lighboring State, who represent® in crests in Forrest City. If there are any considerable number of persons in Forrest City who be lieve us he does, ui.d who are, like him, ready to co-operate with others in securing mills, shops and factories, we can safely predict that within a very short time there will be some advancement along this line. The need of our town is un doubtedly mills, shops and fac tories; and to secure them, a leader with capital, brains and sound business judgment—one in whose ability the people will have ex plicit confidence—who can inspire others and make them realize the necessity of such enterpiiscs. The gentleman, under date of 20th inst., writes as follows: KI.tors FobKest City Times, Forrest City, Ark : Gentlemen—We read your ed itorial on the 13th in.it. on the need of more factories with much inter est, and we wish to congratulate you on the position you take ir this matter. Forrest City certainly needs factories. Abovo all she -hould have u roller mill, an ice factory and an oil mill, the ad vantages of which arc too well known for comment, and with these established the wood work ing factories will eventually come. Our interests are identified wit! Forrest City’s interests, and we -hall take much pride in lending our assistance to push forward any enterprise that may bo started Keep this subject before your read 's and it will bring forth fruit. Very respectfully, *** BLO L' OUT SECTIONAL LINES Ii is the sense of the Capo Fear l oiled Confederate Veterans, of ■ Wilmington. N. C., says the Arkan sas Gazette, that “the graves of the , ’onfoderale dead should remain in l.e care of the women of the South,” and that “the Confederate veterans ought not to occupy the homes of Union soldiers, and could not ask or receive pensions from he United States government.” The Gazelle says further that many Confederate veterans feel as those do in North Carolina—that it would not be consistent for the >ld heroes to accept any bounty rom the Federal government. The}'are also opposed to the ad r.i'sion of ex-Confederates into the amies of Union soldiers, hut there an bo no objection, for which good reason can suggest, to gov ernment assistance in the care of the Confederate cemeteries. It was not proposed by the President that the women of the South should be relieved of the sacred duty of icstowing loving attention to the memories of the South’s dead heroes. All the President asked was max mo government assist in the care of these graves. It was a noble and patriotic suggestion, and tho proposition should be accepted. Xo luw could diminish tho love of Southern women for those who lied battling for tho cause of the South. Xo ono expects such a thing. Tho President’s suggestion was: ‘And the time has now come, in the evolution of sentiment and teeling under tho providence ot God, when in the spirit of fra ternity wo should share with you in tho caro of the graves of the Confederate soldiers." Tho prop osition eamo from tho President of {he United States—a Republican President who had fought against those whose graves ho would have the government assist in beautify ing and in making attractive. It cannot be possible that there is my great number of Southern peo ple willing to decline tho peace offering extended them by the President. Few in the North have objected to the proposition. Its acceptance would prove that the South pos sessed po malico toward the sec tion of country from whence camo her former foes. It would remove the lust vestige of a lino which di vided the sections lor so many years after the trouble which mused the division had been set tled forever. Uniform Text Books. _I • A lerge nnmhfr of bills, provid ing for a uniform .system of text books in our pubiio schools, have been introduced in both houses of the legislature. Wherever slate uniformity hns been tried, unsatis factory results have followed. We have a good law, requiring school directors in each district to adopt a uniform system of books for the district. If the law is not enforced, it is the fault of the directors. Wc want the best hooks in our schools, and county or district uniformity insures good hooks. State uni formiiv will not. Tne consensus of opinion of a very large majority ot the leading educators in the United States is against uniform text-books for the state at large. Professor Jordan’s opposition to the measuro killed it two j’ears ago. The above from the Marianna Index is reprinted bv request. It is no doubt based upon Prof. Jor dan’s official report as state super intendent. Wo are not prepared to indorse it unequivocallj’ or ex press an opinion as to the prac ticability of stale uniformity in text books. There are manj’ se ductive arguments for and against it. We have read from Prof. Jor dan’s report and collation of opin ions from many prominent edu cators in other states, and the con sensus of opinion seems to be against uniformity. And the rea sons given are sensible and plausi ble. We rather think that state uniformity has not been successful where tried, and for that reason, principally, think our legislature should make haste slowlj’ to forge upon the children fetters which maj* not be so easilj’ undone. To pass such a law means the destruc tion of half a million dollars’ worth of books, and the outlaj’ of as much more for new ones. We tire inclined to believe that such a law would not be beneficial.
