Several weeks employment, perhaps longer. Landvoiot & Varakin. The Libury. ■ — Last Monday night * few of our best,! brighter! and most representative men aiul women met in the circuit court room at the court house to discuss ways ami means for the building, equipping and maiutainioc in our little city of a public library. Mrs. O. U. Ilollwa*e and Mr. Juo. M. Trewett made interesting talks explaining their views and stating the purposes for which the meeting was called. Not a dissenting voice was heard, but dues it follow that none dissent V Let's look a little into it. It is proposed to incorporate a public library company with rights to obtain •ouey and property in any possible man ner to the amount of $11000 to establish their library. Let’s look at what could be done with that $3000. Our cemetery where nearly every one of us buve gome dear one IhiiI away could be id a de beautiful; a pride to our town and a monument of love and respect to those we have buried there. We could pay the debt upon our public school and equip it properly anil escape future shame at not being able to have public school every year. Those who would subscribe this $30i>0 might increase their church subscriptions that vve could escape the re proach of having live dilapidated church buildings and but two resident ministers, not too extravigantly paid. With the money necessary to maintain our library we could keep pretty steadily at work a street cleaning force that could Hdd more beauty and comfort to physical life than a dozen libraries can to our men ial and moral being. It is said it will look well to the world —will indicate us a refined and cultured people—will allow we are progressive and awake to our best moral and mental in terests— that we are a literary and book Hi people : which is all very nice; but ,11.at same world will not lie so dazzled by the glory of our library but what it can see our little children playing all day in jhe streets because we have no public .school to send them to; that world will not be so blinded by the splendor of our library but what it can see the rotten .relief, sunken graves, the fallen tomb .-.tones in our gullied and weed-grown cemetery ; the world can also see our dirty streets and alley s, our broken sidewalks, our wrecked city hall, our closed churches, our abandoned Stuarts springs park, our lack of sewers and many other tilings that make us fall far short of a tituess for U public library. Let's table tills library resolution for the present and go to work and see if we cannot first supply the thinks so badly needed to make ours a clean, neat, up to date town in all practical essentials—then 4 library will lie quite in order and entire ly consistent with its surroundings. Tins Othku Siur.. Is Your Life Worth Fifty Cents. We defy the world to produce a medi cine for the cure of all forms of Kidney and liladder troubles. It never seems to strike the Sallie Anns that probably three-fourths of (lie card playing gamblers come from homes where <*ar«U art) unknown—wliem the innocent pasteboards are regarded as inventions ol Satan, and etokiiiole and authors as direct «,ifts tr*m heaven. The boy or man who is so weak ns to become a gambler just because lie happens to learn to play cards, is a gambler at heart, and if he did not know (hud* lie j would shoot crapg. You had just as well ■ warn boys or ineti against riding horses because borses can run, and itec*use some- j times the owner ot one horse will bet his money that ids horse is a world-beater. Y'ou had just as well ask the farm wives not to grow chickens because roost ers will tight and every boy who has a rooster will hat Ids barlow knife that his rooster can whip any other rooster io the ■yountry. Sally Aim, if you want to rid the world of gamblers, do it by teaching the hoys as j they grow up that it is dishonorable to ! try to get something for nothing; that1 '.hey should .give an equivalent for every j hollar they get ; make a social outcast of ilie gambler and teach the boys to avoid . him. Condemn gambling as bitterly as : you like, hut for pity sake, don't b« oo narrow as to lay the blame for gambling ! w4»‘*o the innocent cards. A Ceno Pi. ay nib i CITY COUNCIL.
