Why is it that the city council penri’ts that Choctaw p'utform? It w a dangerous nuisance and should be abated. Tho Choctaw Ilailroad Company lias not yet rebuilt thoir dt-pot platform at this place, but they will. Give them time—about 20 3'ears will suit them best. The sidewalks of Forrest City, which have heretofore been the pride of every citizen, have been sadly neglected of late and are get ting into a most deplorable eoudi-| tion. Mayor Gorman inlorms us that be v 11 soon take a loeni census of Forrest City, with a view to rais ing the incorporated town to ft city of the second-class. There is little or ru doubt that we have the pop uiation. and we need the advanta ges which may be derived from the laws applicable to a city of the second-class. Goahead.Mr. Mayor, and don’t delay the matter. Why does ihe city council per mit those dangerous sidewalks on South Front street, from Mrs. E Boyle’s corner west to Slovens’ un dertaking establishment. Mrs. Boylo has a splendid walk in front of her establishment, and The Times built a new one a few months ago, bnt the others arc in a very unsato and unsightly condition The property owners should be requested to rebuild theso side walks, and they should do so at pneo and cheerfully. We thank the Brinkley Argus for its complimentary reproduc tion of an article from The Times entitled Slander vs. Argument. We have not always agreed with the Argus on public questions, but w< have ever found Bro. W. B. Fol som to be a gentleman. He is not one of that class of editors who re sort to the method mentioned in that article in lieu of argument. It we should fall out with every man who differs from us in our opin ions on puolie questions and the character of public men, we should be unhappy indeed. We accord every man the right to hi* own opinion, and we haven't any re spect for a man if he hasn’t got one of his own. But we do think that an opinion should be based upon intelligent investigation and ”nbi ased consideration of the facts. Many of onr best friends personal, ly, do net :.di rs>* all we say. Some 1:T r from us on one question.' n me on another, but all are agreec ] that each is sincere; that each has many othar laudable opinions which they do endorse; that each stands for the best interests of the community, according to the best of bis knowledge and belief; and all wonld join hearts and hands and give their lives, if need be, in the protection of the homes and honor of the families of the others. This is manhood. We should blush for shame if we were guilty of slander, ing the manhood or womanhood of this country just because they did not think as we do about Jeff Davis or any other public man or question. No true man will get mad at us because we differ in our political opinions The intimation that we have said, or that we think, j that those who do not think as we do are ignoramuses, is wholly false. It is a fact, however, that there is woeful ignorance extant. It is not all among those who vote on one side of any question. Many vote through prejudice. A Co9tly Mistake. F. Walker, who aspire9 to the office of Clerk of the Circuit Court of St. Francis County. Mr. Walker came to Arkansas from South Alabama when a lad of eleven years, and has practically grown up in this county, having resided here since 1S81. He is a bookkeeper by profes sion, and has held several respon sible positions of that character, besides having been engaged with Mr. J. T. Pyal in the mercantile business at Goodwin. llo is now the esteemed and trusted principal accountant with Brandon k Baugh, a position which he fills acceptably. He is a self-made man, who on joj’s tho esteem and confidence of all who knows him. Ho is ener getic, painstaking, clever and com petent, and is a candidate upon his merits. He has always been a Democrat, and has never before asked honors from his purty. If nominated he will be elected, if elected he will discharge tho duties of tho office faithfully and well. We ask for him a kindly consid eration of his qualifications and candidacy. Nt> curp, no pay 50<\ RELIEVE THE CONGESTION*. The congested condition of llie streets, owing to the failure on the part of the Iron Mountain railroad to move tho cotton, is enough to attract the attention of every citi zen, and make him fear for the safety of the town. Every reasonable and honorable inducement should be urged upon the railroad company to relieve the condition, and the railroad compa ny should exert its best efforts to comply with tho demands of its patrons. It is just such neglect and atbi trury negligence that causes a pop. ular prejudice against railroads. Tho 1 imes has, happily, never been able to see why a railroad company should not bo entitled to the aamo courtesy and considera tion that is accorded individuals, but sometimes we are almost led to the conclusion that they bring upon themselves the necessity of i regulating and compelling them by (law to do what they should in all ’ reason be glad to do voluntarily. If they do not relievo these eon ditions they may not be surprised to find the next legislature passing bills to regulate their business for them ami compelling them to do ! what they ought to do. If no relief comes soon, it will be up to the people to find some means to protect their interests from such criminal neglect. representative DeRoeitt, of St. Francis county, is a candidate to succeed himself.
