three thousand dollars for the pur
pose of paying the asperses ol a
term of free school.
The city ought to have the
school. 'I here is no money in the
treasury to pay for it, and it is nec
essary that the citizens who arc
able shall contribute literally for
this purpose.
With a fund of throe thousand
dolllars, a first-class school can he
had. We have worked hard to se
cure this amount, and have 1 en
greatly encouraged this week, hav
ing secured several hundred dol
lars, and several promises from
good men who have not yet deter
mined just how much they will
give. Some seem to be waiting to
see what others will give, an 1 some
•fro waiting to see w hat they will

bcrtainly cannot afford to turther
advertise tiio city as a no school

luces, opinions, suggestions and
speculations have been expressed

be several new teachers. We have

pal, at least, and very likely some
others, will be new teachers. And
while we have not discussed the
patter with the school hoard or
any member of it as to the policy
ho be purs ed, we do not hesitate
to cay that they will Jo the very
