It UIUVR MAOlN Tito reasonable blowing ol whig lies at the several gins, mills and other plants in town ;* not object ed to by any reasonable citizen. We think it t athor musical, as in eating the business thrift of the town, and withal a good advertise ment. 15ut when it comes to thir teen long, loud and ear-splitting toots covering a period anywhero from to 7 oc-lock in the morning, it becomes just a little too much “sweetness long drawn out.” This occurred at the Planters Gin Tuesday morning. Would it be unreasonable to ask them to just make it twelve? We are supersti t cus about the other number. Mr. J. It. Walker, proprietor of the swell new Cafe in the Long Mock, informs us that he will seek greener fields. The patronage ac* corded him has not been equal to Ins expectations, nor anything like his pleasant place and laudable en terprise deserves. He is a very pleasant gentleman, a good busi ness man, keeps a first-class place, and if encouraged would be identi fied with the public enterprises ot this town. It is containly unfor tunate that a hustling man of his character and push should have to leave town for lack of appreciation and patronage, and it is also a lit tle peculiar that the cheap Johns, Turks and others ot that class have never yet failed tomake a good big stake in this town. There is something >r. these few lines to t thick about. Cotton lias certainly been coin j ing in some this month. We nev er saw so much cotton arrive in so short a time before. Labor is no more plentiful than heretofore, but wo are informed that the cotton picket* are working harder and steadier, and that that accounts for the rush of the f!oecy staple to the gins. Of course the unexception ally fine season for gathering is also a factor. A friend of the wri ter, who is a book-keeper for one of the large general stores in town, told us Wednesday that up to this time last year they had only re ceived If)” bales of cotton, whereas at the present time they have re ceived 1205, an increase of a little over 250 per cent. Very littlo of this cotton bus sold for less than ten cents, or very near it. The ; tields are about “ruined,” however, i and thore will he little or no cotton in the patch early in December.
