KKI T»A T AFTERNOON MARCH 3.1906. - ■ - ■ . The lower bouse of the legisla ture exhibited » preponderance of horso sense compared to the upper branch, when ii killed the anti cig urottc bill. All such sumptuary laws are simply an encumbrance to 1 the statute book, and are not worth the paper they are written upon. Such a law has never been a sue* ( ess anywhere and never will, A man has tho inalienable right to buy and smoke a cigarette, a drink of whiskey, or anything else which i does not intcrlere with the peace or comfort of others, whenever and wherever he chooses, and it is ri-l ditulous to uneidtake to deprive him of such right by a statute, un Joss said statute may go to the root of the thing and stop its produc tion. Just so long a? whiskey is made, men will drink it. and just so long as tobacco is manufactureJ, men will smoke cigarettes. Klscwhe-re in this issue wo are printing a notico of a meeting of tbe Daughters ot the Confederacy, which is called for Thursday. March 0 at the court house, and we are requested to w i*o some »' nrj which will imj ress the X>Mc_*tters and others with the irn porta Lice of this organisation, and nduce them to be present. The mere announcement of ihe meeting it seems to us, should draw a large crowd of our patriotic women. The objects of the organization are so laudable and beautiful that further urging should be unnecessary, yet it is a fact that a quorum cannot be hud, and business of importance is being neglected, l’leaso remem brr the date, ladies, and don’t fail to attend. It is a duty you owo the memory of the brave men who faced the cannon’s mouth for your beloved southland. Poi rest City will have a free ftebool, beginning, wo presume, in September next. We hope the board will make no mistake in se lecting the principal and teachers. They should bo thoroughly quali fied, and should be selected for no other reason than tlieir capabilities and qualifications. There should be no iuvoi ite friends to pleaso, no icsilancy in taking a firm and de termined stand in favor of the mosl progressive methods, and above all the principal should bo a man who, t he should have occasion to puu sh a pupil, and the pupil's pater should interfere, would thrash the said parent as well. Tberc are a | m uvi'i} cu in mu imj that hold views of such mutters which aro very detrimental to the child, and the principal who will teach a few of such persons a les ion or two is the boy for ub. Woj think that when a boy is sent to aohool be should bo expected to obey the rules, and if he docs not, ho should be compelled to do so and punished lor breaking them, and the parent who objects to such methods stands in the way of bis child’s best interests. The teacher should be reasonable and firm, without fear, and not afraid to n ike somobody mad or hurt some person’s feelings, by properly cor recting or chastising any refrac tory pupil. Colds attack ' the luncrs and contagious diseases take hold of the system. It is safe to aay that if the liver were always kept in proper working order, illness would oe almost unknown. Thedford’s Black-Draught is so successful in curing such sickness because it is without a rival as a liver regulator. This great family medicine is not a strong and drastic drug, but a mild and healthful laxative that cures con stipation and may be taken by a mere child without _ possible harm. The healthful action on the liver cures biliousness. It has an in vigorating effect on the kidneys. Because the liver and kidneys do not work regularly, the poisonous acids along with the waste from the bowels get back into the blood and virulent contagion results. Timely treatment with Thed ford’s Black-Draught removes the dangers which lurk in constipation, liver and kidney troubles, and will positively forestall the inroads of Bright's disease, for which dis ease in advanced stages there is no cure. Ask your dealer for a ‘•’5c. package of Thedford’s Black Draught. 1 Special Notice There will be a meeting of the Daughters of the Confederacy at the courthouse next Thursday, March 9tb. at 2:30 in the afternoon, at which important business will come up for discussion and action. The election of a President and Historian will also take place. It is very much desired that all mem bers will be present and participate in the proceedings.
