'I lu- alarm of lire on last Monday afternoon, immediately drew the larger |m«r1n of Forrest City's inhab itants to the scene of c< i flagration. Ilu‘ tire originaled in the old frame building immediately south of the Methodist church, the property of Mr. Partridge, and occupied at the time by negroes. Though the tire company were quick to respond, and did valiant service, the house was I Therefor, that those to whom he has heretofore offered the property for sale, have said that they would pay nioie f >r it without t. •> hui.dit:^, and he reasoned that si u'd it hum his soon tieyond all hope of saving, and Irom its si/.e proved a menace to tin* adjacent buildings, particularly the Methodist church and parsonage, to ward which the wind carried the flames. In spite of hard work by the company and volunteers the roof of the churth was ignited and the pres sure of water failing at first to reach such a height, it seemed for a time that tlie pretty edifice was doomed. Willing hands soon removed the furniture'and carpet. though in the removal t lie handsome fabric was torn considerably. The devoted hand of workers to whom the lieautifving and improvement of the building lead been siieh a lalmr of love, while it also represented much hard work and financial expenditure, stood with anx ious hearts while brave men worked j to stay the devastating flames. At last after hope had almost died, the firemen succeeded in getting at the flames more advantageously and soon controlled them, though not be fore the roof was a complete wreck. The damage is estimated to lie at least $lsim. The damage to the par sonage is inconsiderable, though twice it was on tire. A floating cinder lodged on the roof of the frame building outlie.I. M. Stewart property, and fora short time it si ruled to he developing into a danger point, hut prompt attention soon quelled it. '1 he interior wa I Is of t lie church are utterly mined, the windows, with the exception of the beautiful stained glass ones at the front, which are in tact. being broken, although the tre foil above those was soon broken in an attempt to gel a stream to the under side of t he si»if. There was no insurance on the building and consequently the loss is total. At a meecing of the officers on Tuesday night they decided to rebuild at once, .lust how much repairs will lie needed lias not lieen determined, hut they will endeavor to make the edifice at least as beautiful as it was when the tire attacked it. Public spirited citizens will contrib ute to a fund for this purpose, and al ready several very handsome contri bution have lieen offered. FI RE NOTES. Eugene Williams, of the ltank of Forrest City, was one of the most conspicuous and valiant of the tire lighters. He mounted tlie hottest and most dangerous places, and at one time sat astride the comb of the church holding the host* nozzle, while the flames were uncomfortably near. Enos Altman, with undaunted cour age. remained where duty called him between the two burning buildings and had his arm painfully burned. Too much praise cannot tie given these two fearless and unselfish men for their heroic work. The tire company did valiant work, and braved the scorching heat in car rying out their duties. Chief Mc Daniel worked like a trojan and not only directed his subordinates hut himself went into the hottest of the i fray with the names. We would that we. could give credit to each of the score or more of brave | hoys who fought tin* flames, it is im possible to kimw just what part each lone took in subduing the flames. It is sufficient to state that each and every one showed a brave heart and did everything in bis power to extinguish i the tire. The water pressure failed for a few minutes, owing to some complica j tions, anti the firemen were at a great ; disadvantage. It was thoroughly demonstrated that the great need of the laddies is a I complete hook and ladder outfit. | With ladders they could have saved i the Methodist church without the loss of a shingle. Mr. Partridge had no insurance on ; his building, and states as a reason — ■ ..... —J loss might lx* equalized by the in creased value of tlie lot. So there you are. 'Ilie.l. VV.
