Any smooth, grassy iurf icesuitably Ixiunded is an object of idmiration. A house is made import ant ilut onlv by its own size, but by the size of tlie lawn in front of it. The beauty of tlie lawn is its unbrok en character, and anything that des troy tIlls, destroys tlie lawn. The rule is to keep tlie center absolutely dear with the exception possibly of t rees. A common lie lief prevails that jrass will not flourish in tlie shade if large trees, and so people often excuse the barren, wind-swept lawn by saying that grass and trees will not nourish on tlie same space, and that they prefer trees. Now, the fact are that practically the only place that the Iieautiful bluegrass Joes not flourish in the South is in die shaded lawn. Trees with surface roots offer rattier serious obstacles to die growing of grass: hut as success ful lawn grass as I have ever seen has ieen cultivated on a lawn thickly ■tubbed with maples. The trouble with the lawn is that the seed tied is :oo shallow. A first class lawn can lot be made without fi or 8 inches of food soli. With the yard welldralned > to •> Inches of clav, over which there sat least four inches of soil made • ch by cowpeas and good stable nanure, no good reason exists for the presence of the broom-swept, ( beer ess front yards too common among us — Mrs. F.
