Tlie daily press this week lias car rled lengthy accounts of the strike of the student body at the I'nievrsity of Arkansas at Fayetteville. It 'terns that the faculty objected to certain criticisms made of the professors in the X-Ray, a newspaper published by the students, and this objection led to the expulsion of the thirty, live students connected with its publica tion. Upon this expulsion practical ly all the other students walked out, leaving only about twenty-live at their studies. Then President Till man resigned, a meeting of the trus tees was railed, and action on tiie' matter is expected when that body gets together. The Times has received from Mr. Ilulburt Yadakin. who was a puDil at the Cniversity, hut who went out with the balance of the students, a Copy of the paper which precipitated the trouble, and we print herewith, an excerpt from the leading article therein: “The idea seems to obtain anv ng certain of our respected ‘highbrows' that the summum bonum of the teaching profession consists in poun ding daily into tlie student's ears tlie second band plunder of higher learn ing, forgetting altogether, it seems, the decidedly human quality of the victim. The Prof, as an evidence of 11is awful dignity elects to pass tire students upon the street, bestowing upon him about as much cordial recognition a> one might ex pect to receive trum an Indian cigar i sign. * * * -a-****** ‘■This illustrates the attitude of j many of our professors towards thei students. The idea seems to be to have as little as possible to do with tiie student outside the lecture room, even going to the extreme of refusing to recognize him on the streets. But this is strictly a personal matter, and need not be complained of. However. ; it is noteworthy that highest good i done in the teaching profession is achieved by those men who come in j contact with the candidates under their tuition. Certainly not the pen sioned stilt who sits behind a walnut stained desl and emits dry informa tion to be written down in notebooks. This very simple operation may he cione quite as acceptably by a phono graph. * * n * ‘‘The chief compliment we can pay to some of our respited mentors, without crossing our fingers, is that they know their subjects, hut what does this prove? Is not the highest good in teaching accomplished by be ing able to teach and inspire, and i not by merely knowing? Digests and ■ encyclopedias may play tic* part of 1 yielding information. Wherefore it is with confidence that we make th* statement, that as real teachers and inspirers. of men and worried. we have some of the finest negative specimens in captivity. Instead of being able to unfold a subject and make it vitally interesting, they seem to have an ingrained knack of making it repulsive and impregnable. Their efforts to educate result merc y in making education distasteful and hard to digest." The paper contains several tie a articles all well written and all ex pressing a very condemnatory feeling toward the faculty and most of the instructors, one of the articles -ay that a di(Terence is made in the treat ment of freshmen, according to their degree of wealth, influence or politi cal pull, possessed b. said freshmen's antecedents, nf course, we on the outside, know hut little if the daily life and trials of the young men and women who make up the student body, hut we d , not think that a body of young people, such as this seems to lie. would so solidly hack up man or ltody of men who published the ar ticles appearing in the \ Hay, with out t here heir g good solid grounds of truth and logic for the article' ole jected to. Another thing that makes us !*• lieve that the student body is in the right in this matter is the fact that the sympathy of every graduate of! the l niversity with whom we have talked, i> with the striekers. and the newspaper reports indicate that the people of Fayetteville are with them and thor uglily in sympathy with the stand they are s» boldly taking. And still another thing the minds of young people are receptive their impression of things or men are very apt to In- correct, and slights, imagined or teal, ate keenly felt and as keenly resented, ilesides. we do not oelieve that lids body of \oting people, who are iu the main,'- aipus- d ofc. r-.es diligent workers, who are striving with might and main, with every ounce ol energy with which they are gifted, for an education, would take such a decisive step with out serious consideration and a firm belief that they were in the right, The trustees meeting is being held today, and it is to be Imped that its action may result in restoring har mony to the institution and making it what the people of Arkansas de sire, a school where their sons and daughters may tit themselves to le good, true and valiant soldiers in the life's battle and not what the Vllav utterances lead one to believe, a wouldbe education factory, which turns out its finished pioduct of Arkansas men and women, as a machine would roll out its daily pro duct. and with about as much feel ing and human sympathy, one way or the other. J. 1.. MWSOMF FOR REI’RESEV TATI V E. In its proper place in this paper will lie found tlie announcement of Mr. J. L. Newsome wbo lias decided to enter the lists as a candidate for tiie ottice of representative of St. Francis county in the next General ; Assembly, subject to the action of the Democratic primary election. Mr Newsome is a native of Tennes see, of course, a lifelong Democrat and is a it. S. graduate of tlie Normal I'nlversity, >f Huntington, Tennes see. He came to Arkansas atxiut eight wars ago, and the last rive years has t een spent in St. Francis county. He lived near New Castle. where lie was engaged in teaching school un til about two wars ago, when lie came to this city. Since coming here lie has iieen engaged in the real es tate and loan business, in both of which lie has heen very successful. Mr Newsome points to his record as a man and a citi/en as his ix'st recommendation, and besides, be lieves tha» his experience and educa tion tit him to serve tlie constituency faithfully and well. While lie has not as jet made public tlie platform on which lie will make ids campaign, but he assures the voters that his every act, if lie is elected, will lie to wards the furtherance of the best interests of the people of St Francis county, and that he will lie on hand throughout the session, working with all his power towards this end. He hopes to lie able to see and pre sent his claims to all of the voters personally, but should any of them he missed, he asks that, they take the omission as an error of the head and not of the heart and consider this presentation of ids claims as a per sonal appeal for their support We 1 recommend him to the good people of ! St. Francis county, and hope that they will give his claim their careful j c< msideration. Weather Forecast. Colder with rains causing rheuma tic [Min-.
