Mrs. Wigley has been very ill, but giad to see her up again. We have * good school here now, taught by Prof. Jas. G. Green, of Covington, Tenn. Am sorry to say that Mrs. A. H. Merrell and little four year old daughter, Mamie, are very ill, hope too see them up soon. Dr. D. U. Joyner has been cn the sick list, but is on duty again. Mr. J. W. Rhodes is doing work cn the road running from the Bayou to Golden Lake, we all know how to appreciate a good road; and if all would take an interest in public af fairs we would have a better county. Mrs Beal, who baa been sick for sometime, is improving. R. E. Lee Wilson is still trying to squeeze in eleven hours work, but the days are a little too short at both eends. Quite a number of the boys of Atoka and vicinity are over on a sporting trip. We have the promise of D. A. Dear Times:—Once more it be comes my pk-aaant duty to be per mitted to chronicle to your valuable columns a few lines. For sometime nothing has been seen from our vi cinity in the “wide awake” Times, from the fact that your correspon dent lias been considerably under the weather, and as there was noth ing very startling in the way of news, thought the readers of the Times would not be out much; such being the case, but like the tardy set 00l boy “better late than never,” so we arc here again representing, as 1 have said before, the milk and honey portion of Mississippi County. The woods in this section are dai ly filled with groups of nut gather ers, preparatory to a feast this win ter. Fishing and hunting on Tyronza for the past ten days has been all the go, and the hunter and fisherman were well paid for their trial and trouble. Mr. Nat Fieldsand John Lockett, who went to Buffalo Island last week to see old friends and relatives returned home last Saturday night, looking as bright us June roses, and they talk in glowing terms of the country surrounding Buffalo Island. Mr. Nat Lockett who has been one of our best fanners for the past two years, leaves Wednesday for his native heath, Tennessee, where he will locate on his own place, there he will remain until the cold, cold, clay shall hide him. Some improvements are going on in our neighborhood, Mr. R. E. Lee Wilson has erected a dwelling house on the Bayou, and it is known as the Skaggs hotel, Mrs. Winfield Skaggs • being its hostess. R. E. Lee Wilson is also having a large number of aeres cleared' around Robert’s Mill, and at no dis- 1 tant day the old finniliar mill whistle 1 will be no more, ami instead the clucking to a nude or horse behind a plow will take its place. Kiutor Times: Whenever any , great need of humanity appeals to us, or any truth or principle requires ’ our assistance in elucidating, an ob ligation is at once created which we i cannot ignore or reason away with । out doing violence to onr better na tures. In obeying the dictates of । this fundamental principle, that is , interwoven in the very plexus of every mail’s make-up, I hail no in tention, whatever, in doing Miss Ss ' rah Hickman an injustice. Indeed, my article in issue of September 28, r was prompted by the purest motives and kindest feelings for the lady who challenges the correctness of my । statements and claims that she has t been outrageously wronged. I regret exceedingly that a neces , sity has lieen created for reverting to this unpleasant affair again, for when I penned, with sorrow, the last sentence in my last communication, , I resolved never to mention the sub t'ect again. And now, after I shall lave reviewed her article, defined my position more clearly, and made ’ a fuller statement of facts, if a re traction is thought due her, why, I , cheerfully make it. Those who care fully read my first statements with ' respect to the subject in hand, will remember that it contained but two - leading thoughts or ideas, namely: the ruin and death of a young girl, and a general disquisition on the direful consequences of tolerating social equality with negroes, espe cially as far as it relates to young girls; which latter was no more ap , plicabie to one individual than an other, and was intended as a warn , ing and to put parents and guard ians upon their guard. It has not and cannot be denied that Minnie Meadows died under Miss Sarah Hickman’s roof after giving birth to a negro child. Nei ’ ther can it he denied that she was placed under Miss Hickman’s charge i when but a small child, and that she, , (Miss Hickman) was her icsponsible ’ guardian, at least, in the eyes of the community. And now, if this little girl exhibited such exceedingly vi cious and depraved elements in her nature, I submit that the responsi bility of this lady’s guardianship was • necessarily graver and more intense • ly serious. And had Miss Hickman ' shown, in her communication, the ‘ faintest trace of ragret for the terri ■ ole ‘catastrophe,’ and the least de > gree of regard for the humanity that throbbed in the heart of this unfor ' tunate orphan, and had marched square up to the question, and claim > ed in paliation of neglected duty, dffectii'e hearing and aid age, nnd ' consequent inability to give her lit tle charge that vigilant attention and witchful care so necessary to the moulding of character and shaping a virtuous destiny in a child with a naughty nature, the country would hasten to exonerate her from much • of the responsibility that mav possi- i biy be charged to her for one of the i most outrageous calamities ever] chronicled in the memories of the people of this section of Arkansas. Instead of this, however, she suf tered her wrath to kindle, and like a bolt of fire swooped down upon the character and n puitation of this dead girls relatives, and after making; ri uendoes with respect to “ heredity,” drained a nervous tattoo upon a “sour grape” vine, the eating of whose fruit has the knack of trans mitting to the progeny of the eater a set of teeth set “on edge.” Besides, she is pleased to state that ‘lapses of this nature have occurred in the same blood and passed off as mild as a May morning. Bah! A flimsy apology this, for a ‘catastrophe,’ the extent of whose turpitude has shocked the moral sense of the entire country. 1 am truly sorry that Miss Hick-1 man penned that paragraph, because 1 contemptuous reproaches only aggra-1 ! vates instead of paliates such matters . i as we are discussing. i It is not deemed necessary to for- ; tify my former statements with ad ditional facts. The sins of omission j and commission in connection with i this unfortunate affair are volutnin-; j ous ill extent and well known in the : community, and are a part of the unwritten history of the case, which can be obtained when necessary, and certified to by credible witnesses. As to .vuat extent, if any, Miss Hickman is responsible for the loose; state of affairs that resulted in send ing a young girl to an untimely grave, I don’t pretend to say. As I - said in the outset, I regret the ne-1 cessity of again referring to this! matter. I repeat that I cherish no 1 ill will toward Miss Sarah Hickman. In fact, I always tip my hat to sil-1 very hairs, and entertain a live y sense of admiration for the early p • oneers who braved the hardships ofj pioneer life, and assisted in devel oping the possibilities of a country.' But the idea that seems to preva l : in certain quartersthat a man has toj reside in a country an indefinite number of years before he can speak his honest sentiments has about sprung a leak. Truth is a legal tender anywhere in this broad free land of oura, let it be promulgated by whom it may, and this had just as well be under stood now as any other time.
