The eastern man is crying for and getting, will.out reciprocation, raw material at the expense of the South and West. Last Spring a Western man wearing an $8 pair of shoesand 30-cent socks, had 83 bushels of Kansas corn on his feet; $8 pants and $1 drawers, 90 bushels on his hips and legs; f’2 undershirt, 4>?,50 white shirt, -10 bushels on his arms and body; $5 vest and $25 coat, 300 bushels; a 50 cent neck-tie, 5 bush els; a $4 hat, 40 bushels; a S2O over coat, 2t>o bushels; a $1 pair of over- ■ shoes, 19 bushels; a handkerchief, -4 bushels; making a total of 732 bush-1 els of Kansas corn for a fair suit ofi gentlemen’s clothes. A product ofi twenty -five acres of land for one sea son, to say nothing of interest, labor) and waste. If n worse showing can ■ be made under free trade for the farmer corn raiser, in its w ise ss- i pect, we cannot conceive of it.—j L. i lIL7W. Yet the corn-raisers of Arkansas, 1 under the humbug of the I nion La-) 1 bor party are doing all they can to| continue the high tariff robbers in ■ power. Strange isn’t it, that men who claim to be reasonably intelli gent, will be so easily deceived, ami led against their own interest and that of their fellows and neighbors? FINANCIAL STATEMENT. Dkiveii, I Clerk Miss. Co., Ark. ' They AllGoThat Way. From a speech by Hon. J. W., House before the Democratic Ckibi of Searcy: I Some years ago, Mitchell, Os I'ex . arkatia, whoso father at olio time xkas । in the Fnitcd States Senate, became । a candidate for the nomination for Congress; he was defeated, lie be came disaffected, he concluded he was bigger than his party. He made (he race as an Independent Demo crat, asserting that it could not be said of that lie was acting in harmo ny with the Republican party, from : | the fact that he had always been a! Democrat, was a Southern man, and I had served through the Confederate! war. But two years later, to use his ' own expression, he burned the bridges behind him and threw him- | self into the arms of Clayton, and be । came a member o ' his committee, i Gen. Chalmers, of Mississippi, wasa| gallant Confederate soldier, served ; through the war with great distinc ■ tion, and a few years ago became a ■ candidate for Congress and was de- I seated by a republican negro. He | made a contest belore Congress. | The Democrats had a majority in iin Congress, but finding that the ne gro had been elected, decided in his favor. For this Chalmers became 1 disgruntled, and made a race in the i snmc district, as I now remember, as an independent Demccrat; twoveus . later he deserted the old ship'' ami i lentified himself with the R.'publi can party’, and has been with them iever since. Wise and Mahone, i f । V irginia, descendants r.f illustrious: sires,, both had political aspirations, I and being unsuccessful, turned (rai-l tors to the old party, and joined hands with the Republican party. But we are not wanting for an ex onple in' tl:e I. nion Labor party. Tuoyeais! ago Norwood was the chosen candi date of that party. Democrats as- 1 sorted that he wa.- in sympathy with! the Republican party. This «as bit- j terly resented by himself and friends: | he said he was a Confederate veter an, had lost one limb in the war, and could never join that party. Ina few weeks the State ejection was over, and the contest between Breck inridge and Clayton began to wax warm for Congress in tins district. NOKWOOD WKOTE I.ETTEKS all over the country to the Wheelers that as the Republican party had Stood by them in the State c mvass, ami furnished nearly all the votes’ that they should vote for Clayton Then many of the good Wheelers in this county for the first time saw that he was trying to betray them and lead them into the Republican camp, gave him a just and merited re buke by giving Breckinridge a mo jority of more than 1,000 votes. Featherstone some years ago was elected as a Democrat to the lower House of the Legislature of this State from St. Francis County. The bump of vanity was inordinately de veloped; he concluded he was bigger than his party. He first attain'd himself to the Wheel for political no toriety and aggrandizement: two years age he became an independent candidate so- Congress in the First District. He was defeated by Cate by more than 1,300 votes, but under the partisan rulings of Speaker Reed, and the partisan action of the mem bers of Ci ngress, Cate was voted out and Featherstone v< ted in, although the proof showed Cate to have li-en elected. Since that time Fiather stone has been co-operating with the Republican party m all their parti san ami vicious measures, and mark what 1 tell you, when the Force bill is brought to a vote, ho will vote for it if it becomes necessary for him to do so in order to carry it. And by this measure the election machinery will be taken from the States, anil can and will be put in the hands of unscrupulous Republicans and i.e groes. Featherstone now seeks and gets his advice from the old recon struction Republicans. MeClnre was his counsel and spokesman in his contest. And now comes FIZEK rOSING AS A DEMOI KAT, and true to all the instincts of a true Southern manhood, he could have no -ympathy with Republicanism; wants fair elections and combines with Clayton, Cooper and McClure. What a comment ou fair elections. He must get nearly nine-tenths of ids votes from the Republic m party. Then to say that Im is not in sympa thy with them, that he is not co op erating with them, is the sheerest nonsense. It is a contradiction in terms, and certainly cannot hood wink and delude the people. PRINCETON COLLEGIATE INSTITUTE, At I’kim'eion, Ken ri । ky, Will open August 27,1890.
