A man by the name of Jas. Ritter
(lied in Fayetteville, Ark., on the
2nd. inst., who, while alive, tipped
the beam at the 470 pound notch.
A Re-Union ol the confederate
soldiers of Tennessee, and the un
veiling of a confederate monument,
took place at Jackson on the 2nd.
inst.
A convention of the Travelers
Protective Association, met at Lit
tle Rock on the Ist. inst. To each
of the badges worn by the ntemtrers
was attached a rabbit's foot.
The agony as to who shall sit on
the new land Court bench will be
over in a few days, probably this
week. The Attorney-General is re
ported to have said that one of the
judges will be a democrat.
The new party has for its war
cry “equal rights to all and special
privileges to none.” If that is not
the very principle for which the
Democratic party has always fought
we would like some one better in
formed than ourselves to tell us what
is.
Mr. Harrison does not approve of
Secretary Foster’s scheme of extend
ing the 4| per eent bonds which ma
ture next September, but the Secre
tary still hopes to talk him around,
as he knows the necessity of having
the money for other uses will soon
be so apparent that everyone can
see it.
The pension office is giving the
administration a good deal of trou
ble. According to good republican
authority Mr. Harrison utilized his
visit to Philadelphia on memorial
day by trying to get a big G. A. R.
man to take Commissioner Raum’s
place; but he didn’t succeed. The
Pennsylvania man was too smart. He
wasn’t looking for that sort of an
office.
This is a story with a moral that
the Mobile Register prints: “The
man who thinks that the sub-treas
ury idiocy backed by the feeble
minded advocates of that gossamer
delusion, will prevail in this or any
other Southern State, and therefore
that is prudent to hedge will find
himself in the condition of the rural
Mississippian who for the first time
stood on deck of a Yazoo steamboat.
When the gong sounded for dinner
he rushed to the rail preparatory
to leap. A bystander, seeing hii
indecision shouted “Jump!” Over
went the young man into the raging
waters. When he reached shore
and came to himself ho shook his
fist at the steamboat and remarked:
“1 am all the way from Polecat Bay
ou, and I never seed a steamboat
before, but goldarn my hide if 1
can’t lick the feller that said ‘jump!
It does not seem to be clear to
our friends of the third party that
the sub-treasury plan can be of no
advantage to a very large portion of
the American people—the gieat ar
my of laborers and artisans who have
no lands or crops to pledge to the
government for advances ofcash.—[

the class of people who are loudest
in their demands for the sub-treas
ury scheme, are the very chaps who
wouldn’t get a smell even if a sub
treasury should be established in
their back yards. Besides it is un
american in principle, and but an
other step toward ceutralizatioa.

you.” “Thanks” is so flat and heart
less that it actually sounds better to
grab all the kindness and say noth
